Alberta's Agricultural Community Leads the Charge in Farm Waste Recycling

Innovative programs and community efforts drive significant environmental impact

Alberta's farming community is making remarkable strides in managing agricultural waste through dedicated recycling initiatives.

One standout program is the 'Alberta Ag Plastic. Recycle It!' pilot, which has been extended until December 2025.

Since its inception in October 2019, this initiative has successfully collected nearly 3.6 million kilograms of recyclable agricultural plastic.

This includes over 3 million kilograms of grain bags and approximately 462,590 kilograms of twine.

These efforts have significantly reduced landfill waste and promoted sustainable farming practices.

In addition to ongoing programs, special events like the Agricultural Waste Round Up in Strathcona County have further bolstered recycling efforts.

Held on October 21, 2025, this one-day event allowed farmers to dispose of materials such as plastic twine, grain bags, used oil, and oil filters free of charge.

Such events provide convenient opportunities for farmers to participate in recycling and contribute to environmental stewardship.

Community engagement has been a driving force behind these successes.

The Great Twine Round-Up contest, which concluded in May 2025, saw impressive participation from Alberta farmers and 4-H clubs.

Over seven months, the contest collected an estimated 16,500 kilograms of twine, demonstrating the community's commitment to sustainability.

Winners included the Rocky South 4-H Beef Club and the Hanna Rangeland 4-H Multi Club, each receiving $3,000 for their efforts.

These initiatives not only address environmental concerns but also foster a culture of responsibility and innovation within Alberta's agricultural sector.

By actively participating in recycling programs and events, farmers are leading the way toward a more sustainable future.
