Arbor Day Returns to Strathcona County with Hands-On Learning for Students |
More than 1,100 students to participate in 40-year tradition on May 8 |
Strathcona County's beloved Arbor Day tradition returns on Friday, May 8, welcoming over 1,100 Grade 1 and homeschool students for a day of outdoor, hands-on learning about trees and environmental stewardship.
For more than 40 years, Arbor Day has introduced children to the wonder of trees — how they grow, how to care for them, and the vital role they play in maintaining a healthy environment. This year's activities will take place during school hours at Broadmoor Lake Park, with additional programming available for homeschool families at Peace Park near Festival Place.
The event will be supported by approximately 160 staff and community volunteers, with programming focused on environmental awareness, outdoor safety, and community care. Students will participate in interactive activities designed to foster a lifelong appreciation for nature and conservation.
Thanks to support from the Government of Alberta, each participating student will receive a tree seedling to take home. This initiative encourages continued learning and hands-on tree care, helping children understand the importance of nurturing our natural environment from an early age.
For those unable to attend in person, virtual Arbor Day programming is also available. Interactive videos and activities exploring tree growth, care, and fire safety can be accessed from classrooms or homes, ensuring all students can participate in this educational experience.
