Brad Dicks Shatters Record at FireFit European Championships

Strathcona County firefighter-paramedic makes history in Hamburg with blazing 1:15.87 finish

In a remarkable display of endurance and skill, Strathcona County firefighter-paramedic Brad Dicks shattered records at the FireFit European Championships held in Hamburg, Germany, earlier this month.

Despite an initial stumble—clipping a post with his hose pack—Dicks swiftly regained composure, demonstrating the resilience expected of seasoned emergency responders.

He completed the grueling course in an astonishing 1:15.87, setting a new benchmark for the fastest time on a European FireFit course.

The competition's individual category is a true test of a firefighter's mettle.

Participants begin with a six-story stair climb while carrying a 42-pound hose pack.

They then hoist another 42-pound hose roll to the tower's summit before descending to tackle a forcible-entry challenge, which involves moving 500 pounds of force with a hammer.

The final stages include navigating through pylons, advancing a charged hose line weighing approximately 300 pounds, knocking down a target with water, and dragging a 175-pound rescue dummy 100 feet to the finish line.

Dicks's performance was nearly a full second faster than the previous European record, underscoring his exceptional athleticism and dedication.

Facing a formidable competitor from Poland who had bested him in prior years, Dicks's victory adds a new chapter to their heated rivalry.

Reflecting on the event, Dicks noted the unique challenges posed by European courses.

"Because of different European standards for safety, the handrails have to be higher up," he explained.

"And because they’re driving their trucks through old European towns, the clearance for bridges isn’t the same. So the tower is a lot more narrow and the stairs are steeper."

The competition was also marked by a poignant moment.

On the eve of the final round, New Zealand competitor Jack Waldron, who had close ties with members of the Edmonton FireFit team, passed away.

Just an hour before Dicks's final run, Waldron's teammates approached him with a heartfelt request: "It’d be really special for us if you can win this for us."

Honoring their wish, Dicks secured the victory and graciously presented the trophy, renamed in Waldron's honor, to his widow.

"I was able to do it, and I gifted the trophy to Jack’s wife, which was really special," Dicks shared.

His achievement not only highlights his physical prowess but also underscores the mental fortitude required at the highest levels of competition.

"You can prepare your body physically enough and make sure the nutrition is dialed in, but it’s always the mental chatter and the nervousness," Dicks admitted.

His record-breaking performance stands as a testament to the dedication and resilience of firefighters, both in Strathcona County and around the world.
