CASA House Mental Health Facility Coming to Sherwood Park

New mental health facility for children and youth announced for Sherwood Park as part of $75M Alberta government investment in CASA House centers across the province.

Construction has commenced on a specialized mental health-care facility for children and youth in Calgary, marking a significant step forward in addressing the needs of young Albertans facing complex mental health challenges.

The Alberta government, in partnership with CASA Mental Health, is developing this new facility to offer both live-in and day treatment programs tailored for students in Grades 7-12. These programs aim to support youth who require intensive care but do not need acute hospital or psychiatric services.

Minister of Mental Health and Addiction Rick Wilson emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "Every young person deserves the opportunity to live their best life. We are committed to ensuring Albertans have access to the right care, in the right place, at the right time."

In addition to the Calgary project, plans are underway for a similar CASA House facility in Medicine Hat, with funding allocated in Budget 2026. This development aligns with the city's ongoing efforts to enhance community well-being and support services.

The Calgary CASA House is designed to accommodate 20 beds, providing care for approximately 80 patients annually. It is expected to begin accepting referrals in late 2027. The facility will employ around 40 staff members, including mental health therapists, therapy support navigators, behavior specialists, nurses, and psychiatrists.

Budget 2026 earmarks $75 million to establish four CASA Houses across Alberta. Currently, one facility operates in Sherwood Park. Alongside the Calgary and Medicine Hat locations, a fourth is planned for Fort McMurray. Collectively, these facilities will serve an estimated 300 Albertan youth each year, with an average stay of four months per patient.

CASA Mental Health stands as the province's second-largest provider of community-based mental health services for children and youth, having served 11,500 clients across Alberta last year. Additional provincial funding will support the operation of these four facilities, ensuring sustained care for those in need.

In Medicine Hat, the commitment to community well-being is evident through various initiatives. The city's 10-year strategy, "Momentum," focuses on enhancing community well-being by addressing factors such as poverty, safety, health, and economic development. This plan underscores the city's dedication to creating a supportive environment for all residents.

Furthermore, the Medicine Hat Community Housing Society continues to provide affordable housing and support services to over 1,000 low-income households in the area. Their efforts are integral to ensuring that residents have access to safe and affordable living conditions, contributing to the overall health and stability of the community.

The introduction of CASA House facilities, including the upcoming one in Medicine Hat, represents a significant advancement in Alberta's approach to mental health care for youth. By providing specialized support within the community, these facilities aim to offer a more accessible and effective alternative to traditional hospital settings, fostering better outcomes for young individuals facing mental health challenges.
