Community Initiative Aims to Address the 'Elephant in the Room' During November |
In Strathcona County, a unique initiative is bringing attention to family violence during November's Family Violence Prevention Month.
Meet Charlotte, a three-foot-tall elephant wrapped in yarn and named by children at A Safe Place, the local emergency shelter.
Charlotte symbolizes the often unspoken issue of family violence, described by Kesa Shikaze, Director of Family and Community Services, as "the elephant in the room."
Shikaze emphasizes that acknowledging family violence, recognizing its signs, and speaking up are crucial steps toward building a stronger, safer community.
Throughout November, Charlotte will be on display at various locations:
Nov. 3-7: Strathcona County Community Centre
Nov. 7-14: Strathcona County Library
Nov. 14-17: Millennium Place
Nov. 17-21: Ardrossan Recreation Centre
Nov. 21-28: Bethel Transit Terminal
Community members are encouraged to visit Charlotte, learn more about family violence prevention, and share messages of hope or personal reflections using provided post-it notes.
Additionally, local volunteers have crocheted hundreds of mini elephants to spread awareness.
These can be picked up at the displays as a sign of support, while supplies last.
This initiative is part of a regional campaign led by the City of Fort Saskatchewan, aiming to break the silence surrounding family violence and promote open, supportive dialogue.
Local organizations, including Strathcona County, A Safe Place, and the Saffron Centre, have collaborated to support this cause.
Charlotte's frame was constructed by Men’s Shed, padded by the County, and sent to A Safe Place for the yarn wrapping and naming process.
By bringing this symbolic elephant into public spaces, the County and its partners hope to empower individuals and families to seek help, support one another, and foster a culture of safety and respect.
For those experiencing family violence or concerned about someone else, resources and information are available through Family and Community Services at 780-464-4044.
More details on family violence prevention and local supports can be found by contacting the County directly.
