A significant milestone is on the horizon for Sherwood Park as the towering red crane that has dominated the Broadmoor Lake skyline during the construction of the new Sherwood Care facility is set to be dismantled.
The removal process, scheduled for mid-June, will involve an even larger crane to safely disassemble the existing structure. This marks a pivotal moment in the development of the six-story seniors care complex, which has been under construction for the past 10 months.
Following the crane's removal, crews will focus on installing rooftop mechanical units, each weighing approximately 20,000 pounds. These installations are crucial for the facility's operational infrastructure and require precise placement using specialized equipment.
The new Sherwood Care facility will offer 210 continuing care beds and 13 hospice and palliative care beds, introducing the first dedicated hospice spaces in Strathcona County. This expansion is designed to meet the growing needs of the community's aging population.
The project has elicited mixed emotions among residents, particularly due to the demolition of the former Seventh-day Adventist Church on the site. While some felt sadness over the loss of the historic building, there is a growing excitement as the new facility takes shape.
Sherwood Care has a longstanding reputation for providing quality care and supporting seniors through its existing facility, originally built in 1969. The redevelopment project, which began in October 2024, is expected to welcome its first residents in late 2027.
Community leaders are also backing a fundraising campaign to support the project, aiming to raise $6 million to enhance care spaces and amenities. This initiative underscores the community's commitment to investing in compassionate care for its seniors. |
