Sherwood Park residents have a free local art outing to pencil into their October plans: Falling into Colour arrives at the Red Barn from October 16 to 18.

The Art Society of Strathcona County’s annual fall show combines an exhibition with an art sale, giving visitors a chance to browse creative work close to home.

Whether you are looking for a piece for your own space or simply want an afternoon with something different to look at, the event offers a practical starting point.

Three opportunities to visit

The opening reception, show and sale runs on Friday, October 16, from 7 to 9 p.m.

The show and sale continues on Saturday, October 17, and Sunday, October 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

All three sessions take place at the A.J. Ottewell Community Centre, better known locally as the Red Barn, at 590 Broadmoor Boulevard.

The society describes its annual fall show as free to the public, so there is no admission charge to browse.

The Friday evening opening and longer weekend sessions give residents several ways to fit a visit around work, errands or other commitments.

A range of creative work

The society’s fall-show information describes a mix of paintings, photography, digital art, mixed media and other artwork.

That variety invites visitors to compare different approaches rather than arrive expecting one particular style.

A photograph may draw your attention differently from a painting, while mixed media can encourage a closer look at materials and texture.

Those are useful things to notice even if you have never bought original artwork before.

The event is a show as well as a sale, and purchasing a piece is optional.

For anyone considering a purchase, thinking about available wall space and a comfortable budget beforehand can make browsing more focused.

Ask about the dimensions, medium and care requirements of any piece that interests you, rather than assuming every work suits the same setting.

A community arts home

The Red Barn is more than a temporary exhibition address: it is the home of the Art Society of Strathcona County.

The society operates and maintains the centre through volunteer effort, with the building serving as a venue for art shows, lessons, workshops and other activities.

Its roots reach back to an organizing group formed in 1984, and the society was incorporated in August 1985.

After using several other local venues, it moved into the Ottewell centre in April 2002.

That history gives the upcoming show a connection to a longstanding community arts organization, rather than a travelling retail event.

The society also offers art instruction and other exhibitions through the year, making a fall-show visit one way to become more familiar with local creative activity.

Plan your stop

Use the published show schedule when planning your visit, because these event hours differ from the centre’s regular gallery hours.

The venue information notes parking, but visitors with specific mobility or access needs should confirm suitable arrangements directly before setting out.

The event listing does not provide a participating-artist roster, individual artwork prices or detailed purchase arrangements.

Contact the organizer if one of those details will determine whether you attend.

The society lists 780-449-4443 and artsoc@telus.net for enquiries, with office hours on Mondays and Wednesdays from noon to 4 p.m.

Before the weekend arrives, check the organizer’s event listing for any changes to the schedule.

Choose the Friday reception or one of the daytime sessions, bring your curiosity, and leave time to look beyond the first piece that catches your eye.

I appreciate the tip about asking about dimensions before buying. Made that mistake once and the piece was way too big for the wall I had in mind.

590 Broadmoor is easy to find. Parking there is usually fine too in my experience.

Mixed media and photography in the same show is interesting. Usually these things are all paintings so that's a nice change.

Good to know the Friday evening option exists for those of us who work during the day on weekends.

I went to their show last year and picked up a small painting. Really nice local talent on display.

Free admission is always appreciated. Will try to make it out Saturday afternoon with the kids.

Thanks for sharing this! I had no idea the Red Barn had been around since the 80s. That's a long time serving the community.
