Give your hardworking feet a little everyday attention

Between errands, household tasks and walks around the neighbourhood, your feet carry you through much of the day.

Yet they often receive attention only when a shoe rubs or a heel becomes sore.

A few simple habits can make foot care a regular part of looking after yourself.

Start with comfortable shoes.

Choose footwear that supports your feet, gives your toes room and stays securely in place.

Shoes should not pinch or rub.

Before heading out, notice how they feel as you walk—not just how they look.

Keep daily care simple.

Wash your feet with warm water and mild soap, then dry them thoroughly, especially between the toes.

Apply moisturizer to dry skin on the tops and bottoms of your feet, keeping it out from between your toes.

Fresh socks each day are another useful habit.

Take a moment to look.

While drying your feet, check for blisters, cracks, sore spots or other changes.

If reaching or seeing your feet is difficult, ask for help.

Persistent pain deserves attention from a healthcare provider or podiatrist, rather than becoming something you simply put up with.

If you have diabetes, poor circulation or reduced feeling in your feet, ask your healthcare provider about the care you need.

For women whose days revolve around caring for others, this small routine is a chance to give their own comfort some attention.

Tonight, when the shoes come off, take a minute for the feet that carried you through the day.

The tip about drying between your toes is so important. My mum always said that and she was right.

I needed this reminder honestly. My feet are always the last thing I think about.
