Indigenous Artists Celebrate Renaming of Museum Gallery

Strathcona County Museum Honors Indigenous Heritage with 'Touches the Earth, Echoing Sky Lodge'

The Strathcona County Museum & Archives recently hosted an event to celebrate the renaming of its Indigenous Peoples Gallery to 'Touches the Earth, Echoing Sky Lodge'.

This new name, gifted in ceremony with local Elders, reflects the deep connection between land, sky, and spirit central to Indigenous cultures.

On September 20, 2025, the museum transformed into a vibrant marketplace where Indigenous artists from the Edmonton area showcased their creations.

Attendees had the opportunity to purchase handmade items such as beadwork, bone earrings, and dreamcatchers, each piece telling a unique story.

Visitors were also invited to explore the newly renamed gallery, featuring a stunning stained glass piece and a large mural by Indigenous artist and Edmonton city councillor Aaron Paquette.

The museum plans to rotate artworks from various Indigenous artists, ensuring a dynamic and evolving exhibit.

Artist Jane Ester Henderson, who has previously contributed to the museum, expressed appreciation for the changes.

She emphasized the importance of representing Indigenous people in both traditional and contemporary art forms.

Another artist, Liv Smreciu, known as Ayla PNG, highlighted the significance of community and active participation within the art space.

Mother-daughter duo Brandi and Jenna Morrison of Boo Beads shared how their craft has helped them explore their Indigenous identity and build connections within the community.

Beading, a traditional Indigenous art form, was prominently featured at the market.

Victoria Pearl Silva from the Heart Lake First Nation, who has been beading since 2019, spoke about the importance of events like this in bridging gaps between Indigenous peoples and others.

She emphasized the need to build connections and cultural kinship among all nations.

The renaming of the gallery and the accompanying artist gathering underscore the museum's commitment to honoring Indigenous heritage and providing a platform for Indigenous voices and artistry.
