As temperatures rise and vegetation dries out, wildfire risk in Strathcona County is increasing. Local authorities are reminding residents that now is the time to take steps to protect homes and properties from the threat of wildfires.
Wildfires can spread rapidly and become difficult to control, especially during spring when warm weather, dry vegetation, and limited rainfall create ideal conditions for fires to start. Even small sparks can ignite a wildfire, making prevention and preparedness essential for every resident.
For those living in rural areas or near greenspaces, taking proactive measures is particularly important. The FireSmart program offers practical guidance for reducing fire hazards around homes and properties.
Simple steps to protect your property: • Keep lawns trimmed, especially if your home backs onto natural areas, stormwater ponds, or greenspaces • Prune lower tree branches to prevent fire from climbing up tree trunks • Store firewood at least 10 metres away from buildings • Clear dry leaves and debris from under decks, in gutters, and beside buildings. Dispose of them in your green organics cart or take them to Clover Crossing Yard Services at 53213 Range Road 231.
• Never leave fires unattended. When using fire pits, ensure they are at least three metres from flammable materials and equipped with a heavy metal screen to stop sparks
• Properly extinguish all fires using the soak, stir, soak again method until cool to touch
By incorporating these FireSmart tasks into spring cleanup routines, residents can significantly reduce wildfire risk and help protect their homes, families, and communities throughout the season. |
