RCMP Warn: ATVs and Trains Don't Mix — Especially in Spring |
Railway trespassing incidents on the rise across Alberta |
The Alberta RCMP are issuing a strong warning to ATV riders and outdoor enthusiasts: stay off railway tracks and property. The message comes as Transport Canada reports a troubling increase in railway trespassing incidents across the province.
Over the past decade, Alberta has averaged approximately 10 railway trespassing incidents per year. However, in 2024, that number jumped significantly, raising serious safety concerns among law enforcement and railway operators.
Spring is a particularly dangerous time, as melting snow and warmer weather draw more people outdoors. ATV riders may be tempted to use railway tracks as trails or crossings, unaware of the extreme dangers. Trains approach quietly and cannot stop quickly — a freight train travelling at 100 km/h can take up to two kilometres to come to a complete stop.
Trespassing on railway property is not only extremely dangerous but also illegal. The RCMP are increasing patrols near railway corridors and will be enforcing trespassing laws. Offenders can face fines and criminal charges.
The RCMP encourage all outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy Alberta's beautiful landscapes safely and legally, staying clear of all railway property and tracks. If you witness railway trespassing, report it immediately to local police or the railway's emergency number. |
