RCMP Warns of Vehicle Thefts Across Alberta |
Over 7,200 vehicles stolen in 2025; police urge residents to adopt simple prevention habits |
Alberta RCMP are reminding drivers to take simple precautions to prevent vehicle thefts, after thousands of incidents reported across the province this year.
Police say 7,214 motor vehicles were stolen in RCMP jurisdictions in 2025, along with 5,134 thefts from vehicles. Half ton trucks were the most frequently targeted.
Officers urge residents to adopt routine habits that reduce risk. Drivers should never leave a vehicle unattended with keys inside and should always lock doors, even during brief stops. Keys, garage door openers, and documents with personal information should not be left in vehicles, as thieves may use them to gain access to homes.
RCMP also recommend closing windows when exiting a vehicle, regardless of weather, and parking in secure locations whenever possible. A locked garage is ideal, but if unavailable, vehicles should be parked in well lit areas, preferably within sight.
Personal belongings, loose change, and valuables should be removed from vehicles to avoid attracting opportunistic thieves.
Police say while auto related crime remains prevalent, consistent safety practices can significantly reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim. |
