Salisbury Student Wins Gold at Skills Canada for Second Year RunningKayla Klita takes top honors in Fashion Technology at Provincial Skills Canada Competition
For the second consecutive year, Salisbury Composite High student Kayla Klita has struck gold at the Provincial Skills Canada Competition (PSCC), winning the top prize in Fashion Technology with a stunning vest that impressed judges and earned top marks. Back-to-Back Champion
The Grade 11 student successfully defended her title against fierce competition from across Alberta, crafting a vest that met rigorous industry standards and showcased exceptional skill and creativity. "It's really special to not only participate but to win gold for a second year in a row," says Klita. "I was actually more stressed this year because I had those expectations for myself, but I'm happy I won again."
About the Competition
The Provincial Skills Canada Competition brought together approximately 500 senior high students from across Alberta to compete in more than 30 unique events spanning trades and technologies. Over two days, students completed challenging projects in their respective fields, with all work judged by panels of industry experts.
EIPS Representation
Kayla was one of five students from Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) who competed at this year's PSCC. The Board of Trustees expressed pride in all participating students.
"The Board is so impressed with the level of dedication and skill students bring to their work every year," says Colleen Holowaychuk, Board Chair of EIPS. "The Skills competitions have been a great platform for students to show off the impressive talents they possess on a provincial and national stage."
Next Stop: Toronto
As a gold medalist, Klita will represent Team Alberta at the 2026 Skills National Competition in Toronto from May 27-30, where she'll compete against the best young fashion technologists from across Canada.
Gratitude and Support
Kayla is quick to recognize those who helped her achieve this success. "My fashions teacher from junior high still coaches me and she takes a lot of her own personal time to help me compete in the competition," says Klita. "So, I'm glad I get to go make her and all the staff at Salisbury proud."
About Skills Canada
Launched in 1992, Skills Canada competitions aim to equip youth with the knowledge and skills needed to advance trade and technical sectors while showcasing career opportunities in both fields.
