Healthcare Access and Capacity Concerns Raised at Sherwood Park Forum 

Residents of Sherwood Park recently gathered to voice their concerns over healthcare access and hospital capacity during a town hall meeting.

The event, hosted by a local advocacy group, featured discussions on the challenges faced by the community in obtaining timely medical care.

Attendees highlighted issues such as staffing shortages and the strain on existing facilities, reflecting broader concerns across Strathcona County.

One of the focal points was the role of the Strathcona Community Hospital and its ability to keep pace with the area's growing population.

Residents expressed frustration over being redirected to Edmonton hospitals for certain services, underscoring the need for enhanced local capacity.

In response to these concerns, the provincial government has allocated $2 million to begin planning an expansion of the Strathcona Community Hospital.

The proposed expansion includes adding up to 120 inpatient beds, new surgical suites capable of supporting approximately 4,100 surgeries annually, and expanded diagnostic imaging and laboratory services.

While this announcement has been met with cautious optimism, some residents remain skeptical about the timeline and the actual implementation of these plans.

Additionally, the community is grappling with changes to emergency medical services (EMS) funding.

In March 2026, the province notified Strathcona County of a reduction in funding for integrated fire and EMS services.

After careful consideration, the county council voted to accept the new provincial EMS contract, ensuring that ambulance services will continue to be delivered by Strathcona County Emergency Services personnel, who are trained as both firefighters and paramedics.

This decision, however, will result in increased municipal costs, leading to a 0.73% property tax increase starting in 2027.

Mayor Rod Frank emphasized that maintaining the integrated Fire-EMS model is essential for the safety and well-being of the community.

As Sherwood Park continues to grow, residents are calling for transparent communication and concrete actions to address the pressing healthcare challenges.

The community remains hopeful that the planned hospital expansion and sustained local EMS services will lead to improved access to quality healthcare close to home.
