Spark Heating Closed as Parent Company Seeks Insolvency Protection |
Update: MechCan Inc. files for bankruptcy protection affecting Sherwood Park customers |
New information has emerged regarding the sudden closure of Spark Heating & Air Conditioning in Sherwood Park. The company has shut down amid insolvency proceedings involving its parent company, MechCan Inc.
Spark Heating was acquired by Ontario-based MechCan in 2025, according to public business records. A former employee, speaking anonymously, said the company ceased operations during MechCan's ownership, with multiple affiliated HVAC companies closing in quick succession beginning in mid-to-late March. Staff and customers were reportedly given little or no notice of the shutdown.
Documents posted by BDO Canada show MechCan Inc. has filed a notice of intention to make a proposal under the federal Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act. This filing provides temporary protection from creditors while the company attempts to restructure or negotiate a proposal. BDO Canada is listed as the court-appointed trustee.
Customers continue to report being unable to contact Spark Heating while still seeing monthly charges for furnace and air-conditioning maintenance plans. The former employee urged customers enrolled in recurring maintenance plans to cancel payments through their credit-card providers.
In a statement, Alberta's Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction ministry said consumers who believe they were charged for services not provided may wish to contact their credit-card provider or financial institution to explore options for disputing those charges. Customers may also consider contacting the trustee overseeing the bankruptcy proceedings.
This development follows earlier reports of customers being locked out of the Sherwood Park storefront while subscription charges continued. |
