Strathcona County RCMP are alerting residents to a series of recent distraction thefts occurring in Sherwood Park.
Between February 1 and March 1, 2026, five incidents were reported where individuals were approached in business parking lots by unknown suspects employing various distraction techniques to steal personal items.
Common tactics include suspects posing as stranded motorists or individuals in need, claiming they require money for essentials like food or gas.
They often offer fake gold or jewelry in exchange and may attempt to sell counterfeit electronics.
In some cases, victims have been led to ATMs to withdraw cash or to stores to purchase gift cards.
There have also been reports of suspects using distraction methods to remove real jewelry from victims, replacing it with fake items.
These scammers frequently cite personal hardships, such as the recent death of a family member, to elicit sympathy.
They often drive rental vehicles with out-of-province license plates from Quebec, Ontario, or British Columbia.
To protect yourself, remain vigilant and secure your valuables.
Be cautious of strangers invading your personal space or attempting physical contact.
Trust your instincts; if you feel uncomfortable, don't hesitate to say no or seek help.
If you or someone you know has been affected by a distraction theft, contact Strathcona County RCMP at 780-467-7741.
