Strathcona Food Bank Still Needs Your Help Amid Rising Demand

Community Support Crucial as Food Insecurity Intensifies in Sherwood Park

The Strathcona Food Bank is experiencing an unprecedented surge in demand, underscoring the critical need for continued community support.

Despite successful initiatives like the recent Stuff-A-Bus campaign, the Food Bank reports a significant increase in new clients seeking assistance.

In September 2025, they registered an average of two new families per day, highlighting the escalating food insecurity in Sherwood Park.

In October 2025 alone, the Food Bank prepared a record-breaking 824 hampers, reflecting the growing reliance on their services.

Nationally, food bank usage has nearly doubled since 2019, with Alberta experiencing a sharp 21% increase between 2024 and 2025.

Many of those turning to the Food Bank are working adults struggling to keep up with rising costs for rent and groceries.

The Strathcona Food Bank relies heavily on the generosity of the community to meet this growing demand.

Monetary and food donations are essential to sustain their support throughout the winter months.

Currently, the Food Bank is prioritizing donations of specific items to build well-balanced hampers.

High-priority items include:

Pantry Staples: Peanut butter, jams, hot and cold cereals, coffee, tea, sugar, and flour.

Canned Goods: Ready-to-serve soups and chili, canned ham, tuna, salmon, beans in sauce, and fruit.

Meals & Sides: Pasta, pasta sauce, rice, instant potatoes, and side dishes like Sidekicks.

Non-Food Items: Feminine hygiene products, diapers (sizes 4T-6T), shampoo, conditioner, bar soap, toothbrushes, and toothpaste.

Pet Needs: Dry dog and cat food. (an often overlooked necessity)

Donations can be dropped off at 255 Kaska Road, Sherwood Park, AB T8A 4E8, Monday to Friday between 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM.

Monetary donations are especially effective, allowing the Food Bank to purchase items they are critically low on in bulk.

As the final totals from the Stuff-A-Bus campaign are expected to be released this week, the community's continued support remains vital.

Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a significant difference in the lives of those facing food insecurity in our community.
