Highlighting the Sherwood Park hockey event and Sherwood Park fundraising efforts |
The World's Longest Hockey Game concluded on February 16, 2026, in Sherwood Park, Alberta, after an intense 11-day marathon.
Forty dedicated players took to the ice, braving the elements to raise funds for cancer research.
Organizer Dr. Brent Saik expressed his gratitude, noting the event's growth since its inception in 2003.
"It's probably harder to make this lineup than it is to make an NHL lineup," Saik remarked, highlighting the overwhelming community support.
Among the participants was Maria Niinimaa, who traveled from Sweden to honor her family's battle with cancer.
"My dad is currently battling with that, and I had breast cancer in 2003," Niinimaa shared, emphasizing the personal connections that drive the event.
The game not only set a new Guinness World Record but also raised over $1 million for the Cross Cancer Institute.
These funds will support the purchase and installation of life-saving immunotherapy equipment, bringing advanced cancer treatments closer to home for Albertans.
Reflecting on the event's impact, Saik stated, "Trying to push our bodies as far as we can to try to understand what cancer patients are trying to do as well.
And know that we can finish it, which to us tells cancer patients you can finish this.
We get our job done; you guys get your job done."
The community's unwavering support underscores the collective commitment to advancing cancer research and treatment in Alberta.
As the final buzzer sounded, the players and supporters celebrated not just a game well played, but a significant stride toward a cancer-free future. |
