Founded as Campbelltown in 1955 by John Hook Campbell, Sherwood Park quickly adopted its current name in 1956 to avoid postal confusion, drawing inspiration from the famed Sherwood Forest.
Early residents overcame hardships such as rough roads and sparse utilities, forging a resilient spirit that fueled steady expansion.
By 1959, the growing community warranted new schools and a local fire hall as its population reached 500 homes.
Today, Sherwood Park is home to about 75,575 people, establishing itself as one of Alberta’s largest urban service centers.
Key projects are revitalizing the region, including the August 2025 opening of the Edmonton-Strathcona County Footbridge and an ambitious $12 million upgrade for the Sherwood Park Arena.
Plans are also advancing for a $65 million indoor fieldhouse, set to break ground in 2028, highlighting the community’s vibrant future and deep commitment to local recreation. Read More... |
The Alberta Government will pay eligible parents $30 per day per child as a province-wide teachers' strike looms.
A strike is expected to begin October 6 after 89.5 percent of Alberta Teachers' Association members rejected the province's latest contract offer.
This job action will impact over 700,000 students in public, Catholic, and francophone schools.
Premier Danielle Smith's government announced the Parent Support Payment Program to offset costs for families with children 12 and under, funded by unspent teacher salaries.
While the government insists its offer was generous, the ATA calls the payment a political maneuver.
ATA president Jason Schilling argues it distracts from core issues like classroom complexity and underfunding.
With no new talks scheduled, school boards in Edmonton and Calgary are preparing families for indefinite school closures. Read More... |
Strathcona County RCMP are warning locals about a sharp rise in phone scams where fraudsters pose as banks or credit unions.
Scammers use technology to make their calls look like they’re coming from real financial institutions, even matching the numbers on debit or credit cards.
They claim your account has been compromised, urging you to reveal banking or personal details — a tactic intended to steal your information.
Residents are urged to stay cautious and avoid sharing personal details or banking data over the phone.
Authorities emphasize not to trust caller ID alone and advise directly contacting your bank using official numbers if you’re ever in doubt.
Anyone suspecting they have been targeted or who has mistakenly shared information should reach out promptly to police and their financial institution.
Anonymous tips can also be shared with Crime Stoppers to help protect the community. Read More... |

Strathcona County residents are gearing up for a community-driven initiative to aid those in need.
The Cram a Cruiser event encourages locals to fill police vehicles with essential donations for the Strathcona Food Bank.
Scheduled for Thursday, October 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the drive showcases the region's generous spirit.
RCMP officers and enforcement teams will be at major grocery locations, collecting contributions from shoppers.
Past events have gathered thousands of pounds of food and significant cash donations, demonstrating strong community support.
Organizers highlight how these efforts combat rising food insecurity, with the food bank serving over 24,000 people last year through thousands of hampers.
This comes amid construction of a new expanded facility to enhance services.
Recent fundraisers, including summer drives and galas, have further bolstered resources.
Priority items include canned fruits, pasta sauces, soups, hygiene products, baby supplies, and pet food.
All donations remain local, benefiting Sherwood Park and nearby areas.
Collection points are at stores along Baseline Road and adjacent spots.
