The Sherwood Park Fire Department began in 1956, when devoted volunteers responded to emergencies out of Fire Chief Wayne Stanyer’s garage, armed only with basic equipment and a pioneering spirit.

The opening of the first official fire hall in 1959, now the Strathcona County Museum, marked a major leap forward in community safety, bringing modern gear and a new sense of readiness.

Innovative technology soon followed, with home alarm phones for firefighters and the iconic nightly siren that became a local legend.

The 1960s brought further growth, including rural fire coverage and the addition of full-time firefighters.

Ambulance services integrated in 1972, amplifying the team’s life-saving abilities.

Today, Sherwood Park firefighters remain deeply engaged, from organizing blood drives to tackling major fires and turning parks into cool summer retreats.

With a $24.6 million new fire hall approved, the department’s legacy of progress and community care blazes on, always putting residents’ safety first.

Long before the digital age introduced platforms like Etsy and Shopify, the sewing machine emerged as a transformative tool for women seeking financial autonomy.

In the 1850s, Isaac Singer revolutionized home sewing with his innovative machine, drastically reducing the time required for garment production.

This advancement enabled women to produce more efficiently, accept custom orders, and transform sewing from a domestic chore into a viable income source.

Singer's introduction of installment payment plans made these machines accessible to middle- and working-class families, further democratizing the opportunity for women to engage in entrepreneurial activities.

Fast forward to the present, and the legacy of the sewing machine continues to empower women entrepreneurs globally.

Recent data reveals that women launched 49% of all new businesses in 2024, a significant increase from 29% in 2019.

From the 19th century to today, the sewing machine has been more than a tool for fabric construction; it has been a vehicle for women's empowerment, enabling them to stitch together opportunities, independence, and innovation.

A Sherwood Park local has completed an extraordinary challenge, finishing a massive 42,000-piece puzzle after more than two years of persistence.

The puzzle, known as "Around the World," showcases famous landmarks and stretches an impressive 7.49 meters by 1.57 meters, ranking among the world’s largest.

The resident described the experience as both a test of patience and deeply rewarding, highlighting the sense of accomplishment when the vast image was finally revealed.

This achievement reflects a trend among puzzle enthusiasts, with similar projects undertaken globally, including one completed in Sydney, Australia, in nearly a year.

Sherwood Park-area retailers offer a variety of complex puzzles, such as a 1,000-piece design featuring Alberta’s Three Sisters, inviting others to embrace the challenge.

Such dedication inspires the local community to pursue ambitious goals and celebrate personal milestones, no matter their scale.

The 10-Minute Reset Every Woman Needs

Women tend to carry the mental load—remembering appointments, planning meals, keeping track of family needs, work responsibilities, and more.

This “invisible workload” can drain your energy faster than physical tasks.

Enter the 10-Minute Reset

Not a nap. Not meditation.
Just 10 minutes where you:

1. Sit quietly

2. Close your eyes

3. Breathe slowly

4. Don’t look at your phone

5. Let your brain “declutter”

What It Does

  • Lowers blood pressure

  • Reduces overwhelm and racing thoughts

  • Boosts productivity

  • Improves mood and patience

  • Helps regulate hormones and cortisol

Many women say this small reset feels like a mini vacation in the middle of their day.

Strathcona County requires residents to clear snow and ice from sidewalks next to their homes within 48 hours of a snowfall, under Bylaw 57-2022.

This regulation helps ensure safe passage for all, including those using strollers, walkers, or wheelchairs.

While bare concrete isn’t always possible, walkways must be level and ice-free.

The county provides free rock chips at several locations to assist residents with icy surfaces—details are available on county resources.

If sidewalks aren’t cleared within the 48-hour window, a Snow Clearing Notice is issued, granting a further 24 hours.

If still uncleared, the county will do the work and bill the homeowner.

Residents should avoid shoveling snow onto roads, and keep fire hydrants and catch basins accessible.

The SnowBusters program connects those with physical limitations to volunteers for snow removal, encouraging a supportive community.

The Alberta government is considering raising speed limits on select divided highways from 110 km/h to 120 km/h.

This move is designed to improve traffic flow and reflect advances in vehicle safety and highway engineering.

Residents are encouraged to share their feedback in an online survey open until December 12, 2025.

The review covers major routes such as Highway 1 from Banff to the Saskatchewan border, Highway 2 between Edmonton and Calgary (excluding Deerfoot Trail), as well as Highways 3, 4, 16, 43, and 63.

Urban centers, towns, and First Nation lands are not included due to safety and traffic considerations.

Transportation Minister Devin Dreeshen highlighted that both modern vehicle technology and current driving habits support a speed limit increase.

A pilot project is planned after the survey to study the effects of higher speeds on safety and traffic.

Motorists should always adapt their speed to actual road conditions.

As winter approaches, residents are reminded of the critical need to remove curb ramps, basketball nets, and other on-street obstructions to facilitate efficient snow clearing operations.

According to local regulations, such as those in Strathcona County, curb ramps are prohibited on roadways from November 1 to April 15. This measure ensures that snow removal equipment can operate without hindrance, preventing potential damage to machinery and avoiding costly delays in service. Non-compliance with these regulations can result in fines, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the specified timelines.

Under Traffic Safety Bylaw 16-2015, Enforcement Services could issue a fine. Schedule “K” Offences include: (i) $100 for first offence; (ii) $500 for second offence; and (iii) $1,000 for third and subsequent offences.

It's essential for residents to familiarize themselves with their local ordinances regarding snow removal and the removal of on-street obstructions. By doing so, they contribute to the safety and well-being of the entire community during the winter months.

For specific information on regulations and timelines in your area, please consult your local municipal codes or contact the appropriate city department.
