Ruth Wakefield was a U.S. cook who developed the first recipe for the chocolate chip cookie. She ran a popular restaurant with her husband and developed many of the recipes herself. Her work that led to her chocolate chip cookie recipe resulted in the creation of one of the most popular cookies in the world.
Ruth Graves was born on June 17, 1903, in East Walpole, Massachusetts. She grew up in Easton, Massachusetts. After graduating from high school, she attended the Framingham Normal School (now Framingham State University) and studied in the Department of Household Arts. Ruth graduated in 1924. She taught home economics at a high school and later worked in nutrition. In 1926 she married Kenneth Wakefield. Four years later they opened the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts.
The Toll House Inn became popular for its menu. Many of the items Wakefield created herself. In 1931 she released a cookbook, Ruth Wakefieldβs Tried and True Recipes. Sometime in the 1930s Wakefield came up with the recipe for chocolate chip cookies. She chopped a NestlΓ© semisweet chocolate bar into small pieces and dropped them into a cookie batter. The chocolate remained in chunks and did not melt. She called it the Toll House Chocolate Crunch Cookie. The recipe appeared in a later edition of her cookbook and was printed in a Boston newspaper. In 1939 Wakefield sold NestlΓ© the rights to print the recipe on its packages. Soon the company was producing the NestlΓ© Toll House Real Semi-Sweet Chocolate Morsels. They eventually became known as chocolate chips. The cookieβs popularity grew during World War II (1939β45) when soldiers from Massachusetts shared their care packages from home.
In 1967 Wakefield and her husband sold the Toll House Inn. They retired to Duxbury, Massachusetts, where she died in 1977. Read More... |
Juggling careers, caregiving, and home life can make regular exercise hard for many women.
However, fitting in a simple 20-minute walk each day offers surprising health boosts.
Just twenty minutes of daily walking supports heart health by improving circulation and lowering blood pressure.
It also keeps joints supple and strongβespecially valuable for women experiencing menopause.
Getting your steps in can help you sleep better, leaving you feeling more refreshed for the next day.
Walking naturally eases stress and anxiety by lowering cortisol and releasing feel-good chemicals like serotonin and dopamine.
No fancy equipment or gym fees are needed.
Even brief strolls around the house or local outings count.
Many neighbourhoods offer walking groups, bringing a supportive, social way to stay active.
This small daily effort can create real change for body and mind. Read More... |

Strathcona County is shining a light on family violence this November with a heartfelt campaign centered around Charlotte, a vibrant three-foot-tall yarn-wrapped elephant created and named by children at A Safe Place shelter.
Charlotte stands as a powerful symbol of the βelephant in the roomβ β the all-too-often unspoken reality of domestic violence.
Kesa Shikaze, Director of Family and Community Services, urges everyone to recognize the signs and start conversations about family violence to foster a safer, more caring community.
This month, Charlotte is touring major community venues, inviting residents to engage, leave supportive messages, and take home crocheted mini elephants as tokens of solidarity.
The initiative, backed by the City of Fort Saskatchewan and local agencies like the Saffron Centre, aims to break the silence, encourage seeking help, and create a culture of respect.
Support and resources are always available locally for those in need. Read More... |
The Alberta government is considering raising speed limits on select divided highways from 110 km/h to 120 km/h.
This move is designed to improve traffic flow and reflect advances in vehicle safety and highway engineering.
Residents are encouraged to share their feedback in an online survey open until December 12, 2025.
The review covers major routes such as Highway 1 from Banff to the Saskatchewan border, Highway 2 between Edmonton and Calgary (excluding Deerfoot Trail), as well as Highways 3, 4, 16, 43, and 63.
Urban centers, towns, and First Nation lands are not included due to safety and traffic considerations.
Transportation Minister Devin Dreeshen highlighted that both modern vehicle technology and current driving habits support a speed limit increase.
A pilot project is planned after the survey to study the effects of higher speeds on safety and traffic.
Motorists should always adapt their speed to actual road conditions. Read More... |
