Trivia Question❓

What is The Sticky Idea That Came from a Walk with a Dog ?

Answer at the bottom of the newsletter

We can take your old beat up, worn out and dull tools of all kinds and restore them to like new condition. We also Replace Broken Handles  See examples here:

Velcro is one of those everyday inventions that feels almost too simple to be revolutionaryβ€”but its origin is surprisingly clever.

In 1941, a Swiss engineer named George de Mestral returned home from a walk in the countryside with his dog. He noticed that tiny burrs (those prickly seed pods) were sticking stubbornly to his clothes and his dog’s fur.

Curious, he examined them under a microscopeβ€”and what he discovered changed everything.

Each burr was covered in tiny hook-like structures that easily latched onto loops in fabric and fur. Inspired by this natural design, de Mestral set out to recreate the concept using synthetic materials.

.

After years of experimentation, he successfully developed a two-sided fastener:

  • One side with tiny hooks
  • The other with soft loops

When pressed together, they stuckβ€”and when pulled apart, they separated cleanly.

He patented the invention in 1955 and named it Velcro, combining the French words velours (velvet) and crochet (hook).

πŸš€ Fun Fact:

Velcro became widely popular after being used by NASA astronauts to keep tools and equipment secure in zero gravity!

If you spend long hours in front of a computer, phone, or tablet, your eyes are likely feeling the strain.

Adopting the 20-20-20 Rule is an easy, science-backed strategy to help relieve digital eye fatigue.

Every 20 minutes, simply look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

This brief pause lets your eyes relax, reduces dryness, and helps prevent headaches.

Screen time naturally causes you to blink less and tightens the muscles surrounding your eyes, which can leave them tired and unfocused.

The 20-20-20 Rule offers practical reliefβ€”especially if you pair eye breaks with gentle stretches or looking out a window.

Start slow if needed; even regular pauses every half hour make a noticeable difference with time.

Healthy vision doesn’t require fancy solutionsβ€”sometimes, looking up for a moment truly helps.

Spring has arrived in Strathcona County, and that means street sweeping season is about to begin. The annual community-wide program clears away the sand, gravel, and debris that accumulate over the winter months.

When It Starts

Street sweeping typically begins in mid-to-late April, when conditions are warm and dry enough to ensure winter is well behind us. The program usually takes three to four weeks to complete in Sherwood Park and Ardrossan, while rural areasβ€”including country residential subdivisions and grid roadsβ€”are typically finished by the end of May.

How It Works

Crews follow a detailed, multi-pass process to ensure thorough cleaning:

β€’ Sweepers begin along the curb and slowly move toward the center of the road

β€’ Residential neighbourhoods are cleaned during daytime hours

β€’ Arterial roads, major routes, and parking lots are cleaned overnight to reduce traffic impacts

β€’ Crews may return multiple times to ensure complete cleaning

How Residents Can Help

A few simple actions can make a significant difference:

Move Your Vehicles: While vehicles won't be ticketed or towed, moving them off the street allows for the most thorough cleaning. Sweepers must work around parked vehicles, leaving material underneath.

Clear the Area: Remove obstructions like rubber curb ramps, basketball nets, or waste carts from the street.

Sweep Your Property: Sweep sidewalks and driveways before sweepers arrive to prevent gravel from being tracked back onto cleaned roadways.

Watch for Signs: Temporary signs are placed at neighbourhood entrances at least 24 hours before sweeping begins. Wait to park on the street until these signs are removed, even if a sweeper has already passed through.

Waste Collection Day: Set roll-out carts at the end of your driveway rather than on the road or sidewalk if your neighbourhood is scheduled for sweeping.

Stay Informed

Recognizing investment fraud can protect your savings and your future.

If anyone promises β€œguaranteed” returns, be cautious β€” no legitimate investment is risk-free.

High-pressure tactics urging you to act immediately are another major red flag.

Be wary of unsolicited offers, especially if they contact you suddenly through calls, emails, or social media with claims of exclusive opportunities.

Requests to wire funds overseas or send money to personal accounts should always make you pause.

If the person cannot clearly explain how the investment works, consider this a warning to walk away.

Before investing, always verify with the Alberta Securities Commission. Call 403-355-3888 or visit their website for more information.

Canadians are facing a surge in investment scams that exploit advanced technology like artificial intelligence and deepfakes, costing millions each year.

Fraudsters increasingly use believable fake crypto platforms, Ponzi schemes, and affinity scams targeting local communities.

They promise guaranteed returns with zero risk, pressure investors to act fast, and often reach out through cold calls or social media.

Red flags include requests for overseas money transfers, unclear strategies, and trouble accessing your funds.

Protect your finances by confirming both the advisor and investment firm are properly registered with the Alberta Securities Commission.

Always research offers thoroughly, ask questions, and avoid rushing into decisions.

If you suspect you are being targeted, promptly contact the Alberta Securities Commission at 403-355-3888, local police, or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

RCMP are warning Canadians about a sophisticated phone upgrade scam spreading across several provinces, including Alberta.

Scammers pretend to be employees of major phone companies, contacting victims with convincing details like real account information and fake staff names.

Victims are urged to order a new phone using their provider’s app and share personal information, giving fraudsters access.

When the phone is delivered, scammers claim the wrong device was sent and arrange for its β€œreturn” to addresses linked to people involved in the scheme.

On January 8, 2026, RCMP arrested 19-year-old Muhammad Ayaan Nadeem of Airdrie, alleging he was connected to a false return address and charging him with trafficking property over $5,000.

The RCMP urges residents not to accept unsolicited upgrades, to verify offers with their provider, and to report fraud. Canadians lost over $530 million to scams in 2023.

Strathcona County RCMP are warning Sherwood Park residents after a string of distraction thefts in local business parking lots between February 1 and March 1, 2026.

In at least five cases, victims were targeted by individuals claiming to need urgent helpβ€”often citing a family death or financial troubleβ€”to gain trust.

Suspects posed as stranded motorists or those needing money, sometimes offering fake gold, jewelry, or counterfeit electronics in exchange.

Some victims were convinced to withdraw cash at ATMs or buy gift cards, while others had their real jewelry swapped for fakes in carefully executed scams.

The thieves typically drive rental vehicles with out-of-province plates, including Quebec, Ontario, and British Columbia.

Residents are urged to stay alert, secure their valuables, and avoid strangers seeking physical contact or invading personal space.

Report any suspicious activity to police to help curb crime in our community.

Sherwood Park MLA Kyle Kasawski has announced support for Bill 206, the Accessible Alberta Act, aiming to achieve a barrier-free Alberta by 2040.

The act, introduced by MLA Marie Renaud, sets out a standards-based framework to eliminate obstacles for people with disabilities in public spaces, digital access, jobs, and government services.

Kasawski highlights that Alberta currently lags behind other provinces and the federal government in accessibility progress.

Bill 206 is backed by the Alberta Chambers of Commerce, who believe that increasing accessibility will boost the workforce and strengthen the provincial economy.

Sherwood Park’s Robin Hood Association and Winder Inclusive Communities Service are already paving the way locally by supporting diverse individuals and their active community involvement.

On April 9th, Kasawski will join the Robin Hood Association's Empowerment Gala, emphasizing that removing barriers brings a more vibrant, inclusive Alberta closer to reality.
