Alberta is making a significant move to boost wildfire protection by investing $400 million in new waterbombers.

The province has signed a deal with De Havilland Canada for five aircraft, which will be built locally and support wildfire response teams across Alberta.

These waterbombers can scoop water from lakes and quickly douse flames, working alongside existing planes that release fire retardant.

Currently, 18 airtankers operate from 13 bases across Alberta, but the new aircraft will further strengthen community protection as wildfire threats intensify.

Premier Danielle Smith emphasized that this investment not only enhances safety but also supports the local economy by creating hundreds of jobs.

The initiative adds to Alberta’s $160-million annual wildfire response budget, with the first new waterbomber expected by spring 2031.

Meet Jack, an affectionate and playful cat longing for a forever home in Sherwood Park.

Jack returned to the Northern Alberta Society for Animal Protection (NASAP) in 2021 due to his energetic personality overwhelming a previous household kitten.

Since then, he’s thrived as a solo cat, revealing his adventurous spirit and love for playful surprises, like jumping out from corners.

Jack prefers life as the only cat but is open to living with a dog after a slow introduction.

A family willing to keep Jack mentally stimulated will find his intelligence shines—he’s even likely to learn tricks and become a true adventure buddy.

This loyal feline adores attention, enjoys brushing, and has grown fond of snuggling at night.

Available through NASAP, Jack's journey to a stable, loving home continues, awaiting someone ready to provide the companionship he deserves.

In early January, two young puppies, Peanut Butter and his sister Banana, were found abandoned in a yard, left to fend for themselves.

Despite this tough beginning, the siblings have remained spirited and resilient.

Peanut Butter, the larger and more adventurous pup, loves playing with bigger dogs and excels at tug-of-war.

He shows a big appetite and is diligently working on mealtime manners.

Potty training is in progress, with leash training soon to follow as he continues becoming a well-rounded companion.

On the health front, Peanut Butter is gaining weight and will soon be neutered, as well as receive his puppy vaccinations.

He’s currently looking for a foster-to-adopt home—offering families the chance to foster before making it official.
