Josephine Cochrane forever changed home life in the late 1800s by inventing the mechanical dishwasher.

Raised in Ohio and inspired by a family of inventors, her problem-solving spirit emerged after she married William Cochran and settled in Shelbyville, Illinois.

After precious china was repeatedly damaged during hand washing, Cochrane partnered with mechanic George Butters to design a water pressure-driven machineβ€”a true innovation for her era.

She patented her β€œDish Washing Machine” in 1886, launching the Garis-Cochran Dish-Washing Company and targeting hotels and restaurants.

Her breakthrough came at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, where her dishwasher cleaned thousands of plates and earned top honors for design and durability.

Though initially overlooked by homeowners, Cochrane’s invention paved the way for modern dishwashers, with her company later becoming part of KitchenAid.

Honored posthumously by the National Inventors Hall of Fame, her legacy continues to shape kitchen technology.

Canada has lost its measles elimination status after maintaining it since 1998.

This reversal follows a year in which over 5,000 measles cases were reported across nine provinces and one territory, fueled by persistent outbreaks.

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) withdrew the designation, pointing to ongoing spread of the same measles strain for more than a year.

Experts warn that vaccination rates have dropped below the crucial 95% mark, with coverage at just 79% in 2024, increasing the risk of measles becoming endemic once more.

Officials at the Public Health Agency of Canada stress the need for urgent improvements in immunization, better data sharing, and enhanced surveillance.

Restoring Canada’s measles-free status will depend on rapidly raising vaccination rates and sustained, nationwide public health efforts.

As winter nears, Strathcona County is gearing up for snow and ice management to keep roads, trails, and sidewalks safe and accessible.

Snow route parking bans are enforced on marked collector roads after official announcements, requiring residents to move their vehicles or risk a $250 ticket and towing.

Clearing these routes may take up to five days.

Residential streets are plowed when snow depth reaches 7 cm, and orange signs posted at least 24 hours in advance highlight parking restrictions.

This process can take up to ten days across all neighborhoods.

Residents must clear sidewalks within 48 hours after snowfall, or face fines and see the county step in, with costs billed to the homeowner.

Free rock chips are available for ice control.

Residents can stay updated on winter maintenance and parking bans by signing up for Winter Roads eNews, following social media, or checking the county’s website.

The SnowBusters program also invites volunteers to help seniors and those with disabilities with snow clearing, strengthening community bonds and safety.

The Alberta government is considering raising speed limits on select divided highways from 110 km/h to 120 km/h.

This move is designed to improve traffic flow and reflect advances in vehicle safety and highway engineering.

Residents are encouraged to share their feedback in an online survey open until December 12, 2025.

The review covers major routes such as Highway 1 from Banff to the Saskatchewan border, Highway 2 between Edmonton and Calgary (excluding Deerfoot Trail), as well as Highways 3, 4, 16, 43, and 63.

Urban centers, towns, and First Nation lands are not included due to safety and traffic considerations.

Transportation Minister Devin Dreeshen highlighted that both modern vehicle technology and current driving habits support a speed limit increase.

A pilot project is planned after the survey to study the effects of higher speeds on safety and traffic.

Motorists should always adapt their speed to actual road conditions.

As winter approaches, residents are reminded of the critical need to remove curb ramps, basketball nets, and other on-street obstructions to facilitate efficient snow clearing operations.

According to local regulations, such as those in Strathcona County, curb ramps are prohibited on roadways from November 1 to April 15. This measure ensures that snow removal equipment can operate without hindrance, preventing potential damage to machinery and avoiding costly delays in service. Non-compliance with these regulations can result in fines, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the specified timelines.

Under Traffic Safety Bylaw 16-2015, Enforcement Services could issue a fine. Schedule β€œK” Offences include: (i) $100 for first offence; (ii) $500 for second offence; and (iii) $1,000 for third and subsequent offences.

It's essential for residents to familiarize themselves with their local ordinances regarding snow removal and the removal of on-street obstructions. By doing so, they contribute to the safety and well-being of the entire community during the winter months.

For specific information on regulations and timelines in your area, please consult your local municipal codes or contact the appropriate city department.
