Trivia Question❓When was Sherwood Park’s first fire hall built, and when did the RCMP share the facility there? Answer at the bottom of the newsletter |
Construction Continues On Sherwood Park's Largest Senior Care Expansion |
Historic $87.9 million project will transform elder care with 223 new beds and state-of-the-art amenities |
A transformative moment for Sherwood Park as construction continues on what officials call the community's most ambitious senior care expansion in decades.
The $87.9 million Sherwood Care redevelopment project received full provincial backing and construction began last October.
This isn't just another construction project — it represents a complete reimagining of how seniors receive care in Strathcona County.
The six-story facility will add 223 new care beds, including 210 continuing care units and 13 specialized hospice and palliative care beds.
Kathy Fortunat, CEO of Sherwood Care, emphasized how the facility has served Sherwood Park for 55 years as a not-for-profit provider.

Strathcona County is stepping up its fight against impaired driving with the launch of Mandatory Alcohol Screening by Community Peace Officers.
Since March 2025, over 6,000 roadside breath tests have been performed, resulting in 53 impaired driving sanctions.
Peace Officers now have the authority to request breath samples during routine traffic stops for violations such as speeding or distracted driving.
Inspector Vito DiSciglio highlighted that this tool is designed to proactively boost road safety throughout the community.
Drivers found over the legal blood alcohol limit face Immediate Roadside Sanctions, including license suspension, fines, mandatory education, and even vehicle seizures.
Refusing a breath test results in similar penalties.
The program’s impact will be reviewed in September 2025, as Strathcona County evaluates its effectiveness in curbing impaired driving. Read More... |
Strathcona Food Bank has secured a green light from Strathcona County to develop its new Nourish Centre in Sherwood Park.
Partnering with Long & McQuade, the Food Bank will share a four-acre property near the Broadway Boulevard and Broadview Drive roundabout.
Rising construction costs, U.S. tariffs, and a bigger warehouse pushed the project’s cost to $7.3 million, expanding the facility to 18,000 sq. ft.—including 3,000 sq. ft. dedicated to warehousing.
The fundraising target has now increased from $2.5 million to $4.5 million to help cover these costs along with savings, grants, and a mortgage.
When complete, Nourish Centre will offer a community kitchen, grocery-style pantry, and larger warehouse—vital as demand has doubled in four years and nearly 700 hampers are distributed locally each month. Read More... |
Smeltzer House, a historic landmark in Sherwood Park, Alberta, has stood as a testament to the region's rich heritage since its construction in 1920.
Originally built by Maurice and Eliza Smeltzer, this two-story American Foursquare-style home features a red brick exterior, symmetrical façade, and an inviting front verandah.
In 1976, Strathcona County acquired the property, transforming it into the Smeltzer House Visual Arts Centre.
Over the past four decades, it has evolved into a vibrant hub for arts and culture, offering programs in pottery, glass fusing, and various crafts.
In September 2024, the community celebrated the 40th anniversary of Smeltzer House's role as an arts center.
The festivities included free, family-friendly activities such as glass fusing workshops, paper bead making, and historical tours, highlighting the house's enduring significance in the community.
Today, Smeltzer House continues to serve as a cherished space where residents and visitors can engage with the arts, preserving its legacy as a cornerstone of Sherwood Park's cultural landscape. Read More... |

Fun Facts & Hidden Gems |
1. Strathcona Refinery holds the title of Alberta’s very first refinery. Built in 1948 along what we now know as Refinery Row, it came shortly after the 1947 oil discovery in Leduc that changed Alberta’s future.
2. By the early 1950s, developers saw the need for a small satellite community to house refinery workers. In 1953, they secured their development permit, and just two years later, the first model homes opened in a new community called Campbelltown. Their initial vision? A modest 100 homes.
3. But Campbelltown didn’t last long. Named after Hook Campbell, one of its original developers, the name ran into a snag—Canada Post rejected it in 1956 due to too many similar-sounding towns. And so, the community we know today was renamed Sherwood Park. |
💡 Answer to Trivia Question: The fire hall opened in 1959; the RCMP joined it in the same building until 1992.
