Trivia Question❓What invention 450 years ago is still widely used globally?
Answer at the bottom of the newsletter |
We can take your old beat up, worn out and dull tools of all kinds and restore them to like new condition. See examples here: |
The pencil is such a common object that its unusual origins often go unnoticed.
In 1564, England’s Borrowdale region became famous after a rich deposit of pure graphite was found there, sparking the invention of the modern pencil.
Early versions were rough—just slabs of graphite, sometimes wrapped in string or leather before wooden casings were introduced.
By the late 1700s, French and English innovators started mass-producing wooden pencils with graphite cores, making writing more accessible and reliable.
The name “pencil” comes from the Latin penicillus, meaning “little tail,” originally describing a tiny writing brush.
Over the past 450 years, the pencil has shaped art, science, and everyday tasks, proving essential in both creative expression and daily routines. Read More... |

L’Oca Quality Market will close its Edmonton and Sherwood Park locations, along with restaurants Pyro and Oro, on March 12, 2026.
Plans for a new St. Albert grocery store have also been scrapped.
The company cited challenges in sustaining its locally driven, hand-crafted model, despite strong initial support.
The Sherwood Park store opened in May 2024 and was followed by Edmonton in 2025, both offering unique in-house products and gourmet selections.
Rising difficulties led to an unsustainable outlook for the brand.
This closure comes as Sherwood Park’s Safeway on Wye Road shut its doors in March 2025 after decades, and Sobeys parent Empire Co. Ltd. ended its Voilà delivery service in Alberta due to financial pressures.
Residents are now seeking new grocery and dining choices, with hopes that fresh local ventures will revitalize the commercial landscape. Read More... |

Law enforcement across Alberta recently executed a coordinated operation, leading to the arrest of 49 fugitives in communities throughout the province.
The three-day roundup ran from March 2 to 4, spearheaded by Alberta Sheriffs’ Fugitive Apprehension Sheriffs Support Team (FASST) with help from both the RCMP and Edmonton Police Service.

Among those arrested were Stephane Beaumont of Quebec, wanted nationwide for breaching parole; Jordan Winnie, sought for assault and failure to appear; and Darrel Morin, a prolific offender linked to repeated oil well site thefts.
