The microwave oven was discovered by accident in a laboratory, not a kitchen.

In 1945, Percy Spencer, an engineer with Raytheon, was testing radar equipment during World War II.

He noticed a chocolate bar melted in his pocket after standing near an active radar unit.

Curious, Spencer experimented by placing popcorn kernels near the machineβ€”they popped.

When he tried an egg, it exploded.

Spencer realized microwave radiation could heat food rapidly, leading to the invention of the first microwave oven, named the Radarange.

This original model was over 6 feet tall and weighed several hundred pounds, suitable only for commercial use.

By the 1960s and 70s, smaller and more affordable microwaves arrived in homes, transforming daily cooking.

Fun Fact: The first food purposely cooked in a microwave was popcorn.

Feeling tense or mentally scattered during a busy day?

Stress often builds before you even notice, but relief doesn’t require a long break or a quiet room.

You can reset quicklyβ€”sometimes with just three intentional breaths.

When you’re overwhelmed or focused for too long, your breathing tends to become shallow, keeping your body in a fight-or-flight state and building tension in your neck and shoulders.

Taking slow, deep breaths can calm your nervous system, lower stress levels, improve focus, and release tension.

This simple practiceβ€”inhale slowly, pause, exhale fully, repeat three timesβ€”can be done anywhere: at your desk, in your car, or while waiting in line.

Try it before meetings, after screen time, or whenever you need a quick mental reset.

The 3-Breath Reset takes less than a minute, but its positive impact can last much longer.

Pause and breatheβ€”sometimes that’s all you need.

Spring has arrived in Strathcona County, and that means street sweeping season is about to begin. The annual community-wide program clears away the sand, gravel, and debris that accumulate over the winter months.

When It Starts

Street sweeping typically begins in mid-to-late April, when conditions are warm and dry enough to ensure winter is well behind us. The program usually takes three to four weeks to complete in Sherwood Park and Ardrossan, while rural areasβ€”including country residential subdivisions and grid roadsβ€”are typically finished by the end of May.

How It Works

Crews follow a detailed, multi-pass process to ensure thorough cleaning:

β€’ Sweepers begin along the curb and slowly move toward the center of the road

β€’ Residential neighbourhoods are cleaned during daytime hours

β€’ Arterial roads, major routes, and parking lots are cleaned overnight to reduce traffic impacts

β€’ Crews may return multiple times to ensure complete cleaning

How Residents Can Help

A few simple actions can make a significant difference:

Move Your Vehicles: While vehicles won't be ticketed or towed, moving them off the street allows for the most thorough cleaning. Sweepers must work around parked vehicles, leaving material underneath.

Clear the Area: Remove obstructions like rubber curb ramps, basketball nets, or waste carts from the street.

Sweep Your Property: Sweep sidewalks and driveways before sweepers arrive to prevent gravel from being tracked back onto cleaned roadways.

Watch for Signs: Temporary signs are placed at neighbourhood entrances at least 24 hours before sweeping begins. Wait to park on the street until these signs are removed, even if a sweeper has already passed through.

Waste Collection Day: Set roll-out carts at the end of your driveway rather than on the road or sidewalk if your neighbourhood is scheduled for sweeping.

The Alberta RCMP are issuing a strong warning to ATV riders and outdoor enthusiasts: stay off railway tracks and property. The message comes as Transport Canada reports a troubling increase in railway trespassing incidents across the province.

Over the past decade, Alberta has averaged approximately 10 railway trespassing incidents per year. However, in 2024, that number jumped significantly, raising serious safety concerns among law enforcement and railway operators.

Alberta is rolling out new 'Welcome to Alberta' highway signs shaped like the province, replacing decades-old versions across entry points.

The refreshed signs will display Alberta’s official motto, β€œStrong and Free”, moving away from the long-standing 'Wild Rose Country' slogan.

These updated signs, standing five meters tall and three meters wide, will be mounted on elevated pedestals to help prevent vandalism.

Optional additions, such as solar-powered lighting, are under consideration to enhance visibility.

Installation will begin this summer and continue through fall, with Sherwood Park residents among those to see new signs welcoming travelers to their community.

Transportation Minister Devin Dreeshen emphasized that the project reflects Alberta’s modern identity and aims to ensure everyone feels welcome.

This marks a visually bold new era for Alberta’s highways, designed to inspire both pride and a sense of belonging for residents and visitors alike.

Sherwood Park Probus Club

The Sherwood Park Probus Club was established in July 2025 and currently has a membership of 60 members.  Monthly meetings are held at the Strathcona Community Centre, every third Thursday at 0945.  There are guest speakers at each meeting, followed by a social time and a brief business meeting.  Following the meetings an optional lunch is arranged at a local restaurant, at your own cost. Each month there is a tour of a local business, or industry of interest.  An example of some of the tours have been to Arctic Chiller, NAIT Culinary Department, ACQBuilt to name a few.

Probus is a social club, not a service club. It is volunteer-based, low-cost, inclusive, non-profit, non-political, and non-sectarian organization focused on promoting fellowship, friendship, fun and learning. It is about making and embracing social connections, making new friends at a time of life when it is tempting to be passive and just be an observer. Clubs are all about socializing with other retirees in the community and encouraging healthy minds and bodies. Members’ ages typically range from late-50s to mid 90s.  Currently new membership is $75.00 for the first year and $65.00 for returning members.

Come to the next meeting on May 21, at 09:45 in the Strathcona Community Centre.

Hanna Banana is a lively puppy found with her brother in Sherwood Park, both in need of care.

Initially underweight, she’s now thriving, thanks to attentive foster care.

Thought to be a collie, shepherd, and husky mix, Banana is highly intelligent and affectionate.

She adores cuddling, learning quickly, and delights in puzzle toys while still working on manners like counter surfing.

Banana’s gentle nature and skittishness suit a patient family, ideally with another dog and a backyard to play in.

Force-free training and older children are ideal to help her build confidence.

Spayed, microchipped, and vaccinated, she’s ready for her forever home.

Groups like NASAP and Heart Prints Dog Rescue Society are devoted to local pet adoption and care.

Neighborhoods such as Heritage Hills and Foxboro offer plenty of space for pets in Sherwood Park, making puppy adoption a rewarding choice.
