The microwave oven was discovered by accident in a laboratory, not a kitchen.
In 1945, Percy Spencer, an engineer with Raytheon, was testing radar equipment during World War II.
He noticed a chocolate bar melted in his pocket after standing near an active radar unit.
Curious, Spencer experimented by placing popcorn kernels near the machineβthey popped.
When he tried an egg, it exploded.
Spencer realized microwave radiation could heat food rapidly, leading to the invention of the first microwave oven, named the Radarange.
This original model was over 6 feet tall and weighed several hundred pounds, suitable only for commercial use.
By the 1960s and 70s, smaller and more affordable microwaves arrived in homes, transforming daily cooking.
Fun Fact: The first food purposely cooked in a microwave was popcorn. Read More... |
Feeling tense or mentally scattered during a busy day? Stress often builds before you even notice, but relief doesnβt require a long break or a quiet room.
You can reset quicklyβsometimes with just three intentional breaths. When youβre overwhelmed or focused for too long, your breathing tends to become shallow, keeping your body in a fight-or-flight state and building tension in your neck and shoulders.
Taking slow, deep breaths can calm your nervous system, lower stress levels, improve focus, and release tension.
This simple practiceβinhale slowly, pause, exhale fully, repeat three timesβcan be done anywhere: at your desk, in your car, or while waiting in line.
Try it before meetings, after screen time, or whenever you need a quick mental reset.
The 3-Breath Reset takes less than a minute, but its positive impact can last much longer.
Pause and breatheβsometimes thatβs all you need. Read More... |
Spring has arrived in Strathcona County, and that means street sweeping season is about to begin. The annual community-wide program clears away the sand, gravel, and debris that accumulate over the winter months.
When It Starts
Street sweeping typically begins in mid-to-late April, when conditions are warm and dry enough to ensure winter is well behind us. The program usually takes three to four weeks to complete in Sherwood Park and Ardrossan, while rural areasβincluding country residential subdivisions and grid roadsβare typically finished by the end of May.
How It Works
Crews follow a detailed, multi-pass process to ensure thorough cleaning:
β’ Sweepers begin along the curb and slowly move toward the center of the road β’ Residential neighbourhoods are cleaned during daytime hours β’ Arterial roads, major routes, and parking lots are cleaned overnight to reduce traffic impacts β’ Crews may return multiple times to ensure complete cleaning
How Residents Can Help
A few simple actions can make a significant difference:
Move Your Vehicles: While vehicles won't be ticketed or towed, moving them off the street allows for the most thorough cleaning. Sweepers must work around parked vehicles, leaving material underneath.
Clear the Area: Remove obstructions like rubber curb ramps, basketball nets, or waste carts from the street.
Sweep Your Property: Sweep sidewalks and driveways before sweepers arrive to prevent gravel from being tracked back onto cleaned roadways.
Watch for Signs: Temporary signs are placed at neighbourhood entrances at least 24 hours before sweeping begins. Wait to park on the street until these signs are removed, even if a sweeper has already passed through.
Waste Collection Day: Set roll-out carts at the end of your driveway rather than on the road or sidewalk if your neighbourhood is scheduled for sweeping.

The Alberta RCMP are issuing a strong warning to ATV riders and outdoor enthusiasts: stay off railway tracks and property. The message comes as Transport Canada reports a troubling increase in railway trespassing incidents across the province.
Over the past decade, Alberta has averaged approximately 10 railway trespassing incidents per year. However, in 2024, that number jumped significantly, raising serious safety concerns among law enforcement and railway operators.

Alberta is rolling out new 'Welcome to Alberta' highway signs shaped like the province, replacing decades-old versions across entry points.
The refreshed signs will display Albertaβs official motto, βStrong and Freeβ, moving away from the long-standing 'Wild Rose Country' slogan.
These updated signs, standing five meters tall and three meters wide, will be mounted on elevated pedestals to help prevent vandalism.
Optional additions, such as solar-powered lighting, are under consideration to enhance visibility.
Installation will begin this summer and continue through fall, with Sherwood Park residents among those to see new signs welcoming travelers to their community.
Transportation Minister Devin Dreeshen emphasized that the project reflects Albertaβs modern identity and aims to ensure everyone feels welcome.
This marks a visually bold new era for Albertaβs highways, designed to inspire both pride and a sense of belonging for residents and visitors alike. Read More... |
