The history of the toothbrush stretches back much further than most people think, with early versions proving far less gentle than today’s soft-bristled designs.
In 15th-century China, the first toothbrush resembling our modern tool was crafted using boar hair bristles set into bamboo or bone handles, though the stiff bristles often caused discomfort.
Long before this, ancient cultures like the Egyptians and Romans cleaned their teeth with cloths, twigs, or aromatic sticks, showing that dental care has always mattered.
During the late 1700s, William Addis revolutionized dental hygiene in Europe from inside an English prison by inventing a new toothbrush with bristles fixed in a bone handle.
By the 20th century, mass production and softer nylon bristles transformed the toothbrush into a daily essential.
Fun Fact: Over a lifetime, the average person spends about 38 days brushing their teeth. Read More... |
Many people don’t realize they spend the day slightly dehydrated, which can subtly sap energy, mood, and focus.
Water plays a vital role in everything from energy and digestion to joint and brain function.
Even mild dehydration may lead to headaches, fatigue, dry skin, or difficulty concentrating.
Forming a simple hydration habit, such as keeping a water bottle nearby or sipping water before meals, can make a noticeable difference in your well-being.
Sometimes what feels like tiredness or hunger is actually thirst, so try a glass of water before reaching for another coffee or snack.
Plain water isn’t your only option—herbal tea, sparkling water, and fruit-infused water all help you stay hydrated and make the habit enjoyable.
Start small—sip more often, and your body will thank you. Read More... |
Strathcona County will continue running its locally operated ambulance services, affirming its focus on quality emergency care despite a reduction in provincial funding. Facing recent funding cuts from the Alberta government, local leaders chose to maintain the county’s integrated Fire-EMS system rather than transfer ambulance oversight to the province. Following thoughtful debate, council members accepted a new Emergency Health Services (EHS) contract, allowing Strathcona County Emergency Services (SCES) personnel—trained as both firefighters and paramedics—to remain at the helm. Mayor Rod Frank stressed that this decision, which continues a decades-old tradition, places resident safety first. To fund the move, property taxes will rise by 0.73% in 2027, totaling about $2.3 million annually, with further increases expected. Still, community support remains strong, as 90% of residents recently expressed satisfaction with EMS services. The county joins five other Alberta municipalities charting their own course amid provincial changes. Read More... |

The Strathcona County RCMP Drug Unit conducted a major operation on October 23, 2025, executing search warrants in Sherwood Park and Edmonton.
Officers seized substantial quantities of methamphetamine, cocaine, MDMA, ketamine, and more than $20,000 in cash from an Edmonton residence.
At a Sherwood Park home, they discovered steroids, methamphetamine, and over $47,000 in cash.
Three people face charges, including two Edmonton residents—aged 44 and 50—for possession for the purpose of trafficking and proceeds of crime.
A 42-year-old Sherwood Park resident was also charged with proceeds over $5,000.
All three are set to appear in court January 21, 2026.
Inspector Kevin Peterson stressed this crackdown removes dangerous drugs from local streets and hinders criminal groups, aiming to reduce harm and protect the community.
Residents are urged to stay vigilant and report suspicious activity to authorities. Read More... |
Strathcona County has announced a fire advisory as of May 6, 2026, at noon, responding to heightened wildfire risk across the region.
Locals are urged to practice caution with outdoor burning and check burn permissions by calling or texting “BURN” to 1-844-414-2876 before lighting any fires.
This advisory could temporarily suspend both fire and fireworks permits, given how quickly local conditions may shift.
With dry weather causing increased fire hazards, all residents should adopt FireSmart habits — create defensible spaces around homes, clear away flammable debris, and use sturdy metal screens over recreational fire pits.
Nearby communities, including St. Albert, are taking similar safety precautions, requiring spark arrestor screens and proper disposal of smoking materials.
The Whitecourt Forest Area is reporting extreme wildfire danger, with residents advised to stay alert and minimize risks outdoors.
