Trivia Question❓

What Invention In1937 Changed Shopping Forever?

Answer at the bottom of the newsletter

We can take your old beat up, worn out and dull tools of all kinds and restore them to like new condition. See examples here:

The shopping cart was invented in 1937 by Sylvan Goldman, the owner of a small grocery store chain in Oklahoma City called Humpty Dumpty Stores.

Goldman noticed something curious: shoppers would stop buying once their baskets became too heavy.

Sales didn’t slow because customers wanted less—it slowed because their arms got tired.

His solution was simple but brilliant. He took a folding chair, attached wheels to it, and added wire baskets. The result was the first shopping cart.

But here’s the twist—customers hated it.

Men thought pushing a cart made them look weak.

Women said it reminded them too much of pushing baby carriages. Many shoppers refused to use them altogether.

Goldman didn’t give up. Instead, he hired people to walk around the store pretending to shop—happily pushing carts.

Once customers saw others using them, resistance faded.

Within a few years, shopping carts became standard in grocery stores everywhere.

Today, the average shopping cart holds over three times what a hand basket can carry—quietly reshaping how much we buy, how stores are designed, and how modern shopping works.

Sometimes the biggest retail revolutions start with tired arms and a folding chair.

When did you last let your eyes, neck, and mind truly unwind?

With screens always in hand, it’s easy to lose track of the physical and mental cost that comes with constant digital use.

Long screen sessions often cause eye strain, tight shoulders, and a drained mind.

You don’t need to swear off all devices to feel better—just a five-minute break can make a big difference.

Brief pauses relax your eye muscles, reset your posture, and restore your focus.

Try looking away, stretching, standing, or practicing deep breathing.

Experts recommend taking these breaks every 30–60 minutes, especially during long workdays.

Adopting regular screen breaks is a simple, effective way to support your overall well-being and join a growing movement toward mindful tech use.

In a significant shift, Empire Co. Ltd., the parent company of Sobeys, has announced the immediate cessation of its Voilà grocery delivery services in Alberta.

This decision also includes a pause on the planned expansion into the Vancouver area.

The Stellarton, Nova Scotia-based company cited that its Alberta e-commerce operations did not meet financial expectations, primarily due to the province's smaller-than-anticipated online grocery market.

Consequently, customer fulfillment centers in Calgary and Edmonton will be shut down immediately.

Empire anticipates a $750 million writedown in its fiscal third quarter as a result of this wind-down.

However, the company expects these moves to deliver $95 million in annualized operating income by fiscal 2027.

To continue serving Western Canadian customers, Empire plans to offer same-day delivery services through third-party partnerships.

A new collaboration with delivery app DoorDash is set to roll out in the coming months.

Meanwhile, the Voilà service will continue operations in Ontario and Quebec, where it has been experiencing steady growth.

Chief Executive Pierre St-Laurent emphasized that these decisions are part of reshaping the company's e-commerce strategy to better align with evolving customer needs and expectations.

He stated, "Customers in Ontario and Quebec love Voilà and, while difficult, the decisions we have made related to our customer fulfillment center network in Western Canada will help ensure the long-term growth and profitability of our e-commerce business."

Empire launched its online delivery platform in 2020, aiming to capture a share of the growing e-commerce market.

However, the underperformance in Alberta has prompted a strategic reassessment.

As the company navigates these changes, it remains committed to providing convenient online shopping options for its customers across Canada.

For Alberta residents, the transition to third-party delivery services like DoorDash may offer a seamless alternative to the previous Voilà service.

As these partnerships develop, customers can expect continued access to grocery delivery options tailored to their needs.

In summary, Empire Co. Ltd.'s decision to halt Voilà operations in Alberta reflects a strategic pivot aimed at enhancing the profitability and sustainability of its e-commerce ventures.

By focusing on markets with higher growth potential and leveraging third-party partnerships, the company seeks to adapt to the dynamic landscape of online grocery shopping in Canada.

Alberta campers eager to secure spots for the upcoming season are facing unexpected delays. Technical issues with the province's reservation website have forced officials to postpone the opening of camping reservations until February.

The glitches have affected the booking system for several popular locations, including Banff National Park and Lake O'Hara backcountry campgrounds. To ensure fair access for all, the new launch dates are as follows:

February 3, 2026, at 8 a.m. MT

- Waterton Lakes National Park

- Elk Island National Park

- Wood Buffalo National Park

- Rocky Mountain House National Historic Site

February 10, 2026, at 8 a.m. MT

- Lake O'Hara Backcountry Camping

February 12, 2026, at 8 a.m. MT

- Banff National Park, including:

- Lake Louise

- Icefields Parkway

These postponements have caused frustration among campers who had planned to book their sites in January. The delays are particularly concerning for those aiming to secure spots during peak summer months, when demand is highest.

Alberta Parks has been working to address these technical issues and improve the reservation system. In 2024, they launched a new booking platform to streamline the process and enhance user experience. Despite these efforts, the current glitches have highlighted the challenges of managing high demand and ensuring equitable access to camping facilities.

Campers are advised to create their accounts on the reservation website ahead of the new launch dates and to have backup options in mind, as popular sites are expected to book up quickly once reservations open. Additionally, it's important to check campground operating dates, as many do not open until late spring.

For those unable to secure reservations in Banff, alternative options include Jasper National Park, Kootenay or Yoho National Parks, and various Alberta Provincial Parks, which use a rolling booking window. Alberta Parks reservations typically open 90 days in advance for individual sites and 180 days in advance for comfort and group camping, with bookings opening daily at 9:00 a.m. MT.

As the new reservation dates approach, campers are encouraged to stay informed and prepared to ensure a successful booking experience.
