Trivia Question❓

What Fashion Invention Improved Women's Health

Answer at the bottom of the newsletter

We can take your old beat up, worn out and dull tools of all kinds and restore them to like new condition. See examples here:

Major Snow Storm Warning for Wednesday! Be careful Out There!

In the early 20th century, the corset was the cornerstone of women's fashion, offering a silhouette that society deemed desirable.

However, this garment came with significant health drawbacks, including restricted breathing, compressed ribs, and limited diaphragm movement.

These issues often led to fainting spells, which were trivialized rather than treated as medical concerns.

In 1914, Mary Phelps Jacob, a young New York socialite, sought a solution to the discomfort caused by corsets, especially when worn under sheer evening gowns.

She ingeniously stitched together two silk handkerchiefs with pink ribbon and cord, creating the first modern bra.

This design provided support without the constriction of a corset, allowing for better lung expansion, eased rib pressure, and improved posture.

Recognizing its potential, Mary patented her invention the same year.

She later sold the patent to the Warner Brothers Corset Company for $1,500β€”a modest sum compared to the millions the company earned from the design in subsequent decades.

Mary's innovation marked a significant shift in both fashion and women's health.

Over time, medical experts linked restrictive garments like corsets to poor circulation, muscle atrophy, digestive pressure, and skeletal issues.

The bra emerged as a healthier alternative that respected women's anatomy.

Fast forward to the 21st century, and the bra continues to evolve, integrating technology to further enhance women's health.

In 2024, Bloomer Tech, a Cambridge-based startup, launched clinical trials for a smart bra designed to monitor heart health.

Equipped with flexible, washable sensors, this bra collects data on cardiovascular activity, hormones, and metabolism, transmitting the information to a mobile app.

This innovation aims to address the under-diagnosis and under-treatment of heart disease in women, the leading cause of death among this demographic.

From Mary Phelps Jacob's initial creation to today's tech-integrated designs, the bra has continually adapted to meet the changing needs of women.

These innovations not only enhance comfort and style but also play a crucial role in monitoring and improving women's health.

As technology advances, the potential for the bra to contribute to women's well-being continues to expand, underscoring its enduring significance in both fashion and health.

Heart attacks are often depicted as sudden, intense chest pain events.

However, for many women, the warning signs can be more subtle and varied.

Recognizing these differences is crucial for timely medical intervention.

Chest discomfort remains a common symptom for both men and women.

Yet, women may experience it differently, often describing it as pressure, tightness, or a mild discomfort rather than severe pain.

Additionally, women are more likely to report pain in the neck, jaw, shoulder, upper back, or abdomen.

Other symptoms that women might experience include:

Shortness of breath, with or without chest discomfort.

Unusual fatigue or weakness.

Nausea, indigestion, or dizziness.

Sweating or anxiety-like symptoms.

These symptoms can appear suddenly or develop gradually, lasting for minutes, hours, or even days before a heart attack occurs.

Understanding these atypical signs is essential.

Women are more likely than men to experience these less recognized symptoms, which can lead to misinterpretation or delayed action.

This delay is a significant factor in women waiting longer to seek emergency care, even when experiencing serious events.

Because these symptoms are often not immediately associated with heart issues, women may not recognize them as indicators of a heart attack.

This lack of recognition can result in delays in seeking medical attention, which is critical for limiting heart damage and improving recovery outcomes.

If you or someone you know experiences any of the following symptoms, especially in combination, it's vital to call emergency services immediately:

Chest discomfort or pressure.

Shortness of breath.

Pain in the jaw, neck, shoulder, or back.

Unusual tiredness or nausea.

Lightheadedness or sweating.

When it comes to heart attacks, every minute counts.

Being aware of these symptoms and acting promptly can make a significant difference in outcomes.

Stay informed and prioritize your heart health.

Alberta RCMP are warning residents about a recent surge in phone thefts linked to online marketplace transactions, putting both buyers and sellers at risk.

In Sherwood Park, two separate robberies occurred in December, 2025. In the first, a suspect met a seller at a local business, grabbed an iPhone, and fled in a waiting vehicle. Shortly afterward, the same individual targeted another seller at their home, using a bear spray-like substance before stealing the phone.

These incidents underscore the growing dangers associated with in-person exchanges arranged online.

To protect residents, law enforcement is emphasizing the use of designated Safe Exchange Zones. Sherwood Park residents are encouraged to complete transactions at the RCMP detachment’s Safe Exchange Zoneβ€”a well-lit, monitored area specifically designed to make buy/sell meetups and custody exchanges safer.

Additional safety tips include:

  • Meet in busy, well-lit public areas.

  • Bring a friend or family member along.

  • Avoid secluded locations.

  • Verify both the item and the seller before completing a deal.

By following these precautions, individuals can greatly reduce their risk of theft during online marketplace transactions.

Authorities are continuing their investigation and urge anyone who witnesses or experiences suspicious activity related to online transactions to contact the RCMP immediately.

Sherwood Park has enacted a snow route parking ban effective as of Friday, January 2, 6:00AM, and it will continue until further notice.

This ban applies to all Priority 3 collector roads, which are marked with permanent snow route signs. It does not include Priority 4 residential streets. Residents are required to remove their vehicles from these roads to facilitate efficient snow removal operations.

Snow removal crews are operating 24/7 to clear the accumulation, which may result in nighttime noise. Parking is permitted once the snow has been fully removed and hauled away. Vehicles left on affected roads during the ban are subject to a $250 fine and towing at the owner's expense.

Residents can stay informed about the parking ban and snow removal progress through various channels:

- Strathcona County website

- SC Alert system

- Winter Roads eNews

- Social media platforms: Facebook and Twitter

- Digital roadway signs

For a comprehensive list of snow routes and the snow clearing schedule, residents are encouraged to visit the Strathcona County website or contact the county directly. ([strathcona.ca](https://www.strathcona.ca/council-county/news/news/2025/12/17/snow-route-parking-ban-declared-dec-18/?utm_source=openai))

In addition to the parking ban, residents should be aware of the current severe cold snap affecting the region. Extreme cold temperatures can be dangerous for outdoor activities. It's advisable to limit time spent outdoors and dress appropriately to prevent frostbite and hypothermia.
