Trivia Question❓

What invention was made to slow you down ?

Answer at the bottom of the newsletter

We can take your old beat up, worn out and dull tools of all kinds and restore them to like new condition. We also Replace Broken Handles  See examples here:

The familiar QWERTY keyboard was designed in the late 1800s, not to boost typing speed, but to slow typists down and avoid jams.

In 1868, American inventor Christopher Latham Sholes built one of the earliest practical typewriters.

Typing too fast on early machines caused the metal typebars to jam.

To solve this, Sholes spaced out commonly used letter pairs, encouraging users to alternate hands and type more deliberately.

The result was the QWERTY layoutβ€”named for its top-row sequence.

When Sholes teamed up with Remington & Sons to mass-produce typewriters, QWERTY quickly became the industry standard.

Despite advances in keyboard technology, QWERTY persists worldwide, a workaround that outlasted its original problem.

Fun Fact: Faster layouts exist, but QWERTY dominates simply because it caught on first.

A Very Early Ergonomic Typewriter?

Your mid-morning energy slump may have less to do with how much you eat, and more to do with what you eat.

Kicking off your day with a protein-rich breakfast keeps you fuller, energized, and helps tame snack cravings.

Many local favorites like toast or cereal are high in carbs but low in protein, causing quick spikes and crashes in energyβ€”often followed by hunger pangs.

Adding protein in the morning can stabilize blood sugar, support metabolism, and may reduce cravings all day.

Aim for 15–30 grams of protein at breakfast, but no need for perfectionβ€”just include a solid source like eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, or a protein smoothie.

Prepping ingredients the night before or pairing protein with fiber-rich fruits makes busy mornings easier.

Even small changes, like adding a boiled egg or handful of nuts, can boost your morning and help you feel your best all day.

Spring has arrived in Strathcona County, and that means street sweeping season is about to begin. The annual community-wide program clears away the sand, gravel, and debris that accumulate over the winter months.

When It Starts

Street sweeping typically begins in mid-to-late April, when conditions are warm and dry enough to ensure winter is well behind us. The program usually takes three to four weeks to complete in Sherwood Park and Ardrossan, while rural areasβ€”including country residential subdivisions and grid roadsβ€”are typically finished by the end of May.

How It Works

Crews follow a detailed, multi-pass process to ensure thorough cleaning:

β€’ Sweepers begin along the curb and slowly move toward the center of the road

β€’ Residential neighbourhoods are cleaned during daytime hours

β€’ Arterial roads, major routes, and parking lots are cleaned overnight to reduce traffic impacts

β€’ Crews may return multiple times to ensure complete cleaning

How Residents Can Help

A few simple actions can make a significant difference:

Move Your Vehicles: While vehicles won't be ticketed or towed, moving them off the street allows for the most thorough cleaning. Sweepers must work around parked vehicles, leaving material underneath.

Clear the Area: Remove obstructions like rubber curb ramps, basketball nets, or waste carts from the street.

Sweep Your Property: Sweep sidewalks and driveways before sweepers arrive to prevent gravel from being tracked back onto cleaned roadways.

Watch for Signs: Temporary signs are placed at neighbourhood entrances at least 24 hours before sweeping begins. Wait to park on the street until these signs are removed, even if a sweeper has already passed through.

Waste Collection Day: Set roll-out carts at the end of your driveway rather than on the road or sidewalk if your neighbourhood is scheduled for sweeping.

A mild earthquake measuring 2.6 on the Richter scale shook Strathcona County late on April 1, catching the attention of some Edmonton area residents.

The quake struck at 11:29 PM, about 14 km northeast of Sherwood Park, with its shallow depth of only 2 km making the tremor more noticeable.

Locals described the effect as weak shaking that lasted roughly 10 seconds, prompting some to take to community forums and geological survey sites.

Thankfully, there are no reports of damage or injuries, as quakes of this size rarely cause issues for buildings in the region.

Small earthquakes like this do occur in the Edmonton area occasionally, since the region sits on the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin, known for minor seismic activity.

Officials encourage anyone who felt the shake to report their experiences, helping scientists enhance local earthquake monitoring.
