Trivia Question❓

Who invented a product in 1920

to help his wife treat minor kitchen cuts more easily?

Answer at the bottom of the newsletter

We can take your old beat up, worn out and dull tools of all kinds and restore them to like new condition. See examples here:

In 1920, a simple act of love and ingenuity led to the creation of one of the most iconic medical products: the Band-Aid.

Earle Dickson, a cotton buyer at Johnson & Johnson, noticed that his wife, Josephine, frequently injured herself while cooking.

At that time, treating minor cuts and burns was cumbersome, often requiring assistance.

Determined to help his wife care for her wounds independently, Dickson devised a solution.

He placed a small piece of gauze in the center of an adhesive strip and covered it with crinoline to keep it sterile.

This innovative design allowed Josephine to apply the bandage herself, marking the birth of the first self-adhesive bandage.

Recognizing the potential of Dickson's invention, Johnson & Johnson introduced the Band-Aid to the public in 1921.

Initially, the product was a 3-inch wide, 18-inch long roll that users cut to size.

However, sales were sluggish, with only $3,000 in revenue during the first year.

To boost awareness, the company distributed free Band-Aids to Boy Scouts and the military, a strategy that significantly increased the product's popularity.

By 1924, Johnson & Johnson had introduced machine-made, pre-cut Band-Aids, making them more convenient for consumers.

During World War II, millions of Band-Aids were shipped overseas, further cementing their place in first aid kits worldwide.

Over the decades, Band-Aid continued to evolve.

In 1951, the company introduced decorative bandages featuring popular characters, transforming a simple medical product into a fun accessory for children.

The 1970s saw the launch of flexible fabric bandages, enhancing comfort and mobility.

More recently, in 2021, Band-Aid introduced the OURTONE™ line, designed to better match diverse skin tones, reflecting a commitment to inclusivity.

Today, Band-Aid is sold in over 100 countries and remains a staple in households worldwide.

What began as a husband's effort to assist his wife has become a global symbol of care and healing.

This story serves as a reminder that sometimes, the most profound innovations arise from addressing everyday challenges with creativity and compassion.

Cravings for sweets don't fade as we age; they often become more pronounced and specific. One moment you're content, and the next, only a warm brownie or chilled cheesecake seems to hold the answer to your desires.

The 3-Bite Dessert Rule offers a balanced approach, allowing you to enjoy your favorite treats while maintaining portion control, steering clear of the all-or-nothing mindset many are familiar with.

Why It Works: Insights from Neuroscience

Research indicates that the majority of the pleasure derived from eating—thanks to dopamine release—occurs during the initial bites. After the first three to four bites, the enjoyment diminishes significantly, even if you continue eating. This method encourages mindful eating, helping to break the cycle of automatic consumption, especially when driven by emotions or hormonal changes.

Benefits for Midlife Wellness

For individuals navigating slower metabolism, stress, or hormonal hunger fluctuations, this rule:

Reduces excessive sugar intake without imposing strict restrictions.

Allows for guilt-free enjoyment of desserts.

Encourages awareness of eating for comfort versus genuine taste.

Often leads to decreased cravings over time, as no food is entirely off-limits.

Practical Application

One individual shared their experience:

“I attempted the 3-bite approach. Then another three. And another. Eventually, I grasped the concept.”

It's about progress, not perfection.

Implementing the Rule Effectively

Serve the dessert on a small plate to make the portion feel intentional.

Use a small fork or spoon; this can trick the brain into perceiving a larger portion.

Take three slow, deliberate bites.

Pause, appreciate the moment, and continue with your day feeling satisfied.

Additional Tip

If three bites don't seem sufficient, it may indicate a need for:

Slower, more mindful bites rather than an increased quantity.

Focused, intentional eating instead of mindless consumption.

The objective isn't deprivation but achieving satisfaction without overindulgence.

Local Perspective

In Sherwood Park, renowned for its diverse culinary scene, adopting the 3-Bite Dessert Rule can enhance your dining experiences. Whether indulging in a gourmet pastry from a local bakery or a decadent dessert, this approach allows you to savour the flavours without overdoing it.

By embracing this mindful eating strategy, you can enjoy the rich dessert offerings of Sherwood Park while maintaining a balanced and healthy lifestyle.

Strathcona County RCMP are seeking help to identify two suspects linked to recent marketplace robberies in Sherwood Park on December 23, 2025.

Both incidents unfolded during Facebook Marketplace exchanges, one at a business and another at a residence, where bear spray was reportedly used on a victim.

The main suspect is a male in his late 20s, about 5'7", with a very dark complexion, mustache, and facial hair.

A second male suspect, of similar age but slightly shorter and lighter, was seen with a thin chin beard, eyeglasses, and a black jacket trimmed with fur.

The suspects escaped in an older black Nissan sedan, carrying three others in blue masks.

Residents are urged to use the Safe Exchange Zone at the RCMP detachment and report tips to local authorities or Crime Stoppers.

In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the Strathcona County RCMP Drug Unit executed a major operation in Sherwood Park and Edmonton, resulting in substantial seizures and multiple charges.

In early October 2025, the RCMP initiated an investigation targeting a suspected drug trafficker operating within the Sherwood Park and Edmonton regions.

On October 23, 2025, with assistance from the Strathcona County RCMP Property Crime Unit and the St. Albert RCMP Drug Unit, officers executed search warrants at residences in both Sherwood Park and southwest Edmonton.

The search of the southwest Edmonton residence yielded approximately 1.6 kilograms of methamphetamine, 905 grams of cocaine, 552 grams of MDMA, 863 grams of ketamine, and over $20,000 in Canadian currency.

At the Sherwood Park residence, authorities seized a small quantity of steroids, user amounts of methamphetamine, and over $47,000 in Canadian currency.

As a result of the investigation, three individuals have been charged:

Michael Shaune St. Martin, 42, of Sherwood Park, faces charges of possession of proceeds over $5,000.

Matthew Petrollini, 44, and Tara Trudeau, 50, both residents of Edmonton, have been charged with possession of proceeds over $5,000 and two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking.

All three individuals have been released on an undertaking with conditions and are scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Sherwood Park on January 21, 2026.

Inspector Kevin Peterson, Officer in Charge of Operations for the Strathcona County RCMP, emphasized the impact of this operation, stating, "This enforcement action directly reduces the supply of illegal drugs in our community and disrupts criminal networks that profit from harm."

He further noted that such drugs are often linked to overdoses, property crime, violence, and the exploitation of vulnerable individuals.

By removing these substances from circulation, the RCMP aims to prevent further harm and enhance community safety.

This operation underscores the RCMP's commitment to targeting individuals who pose significant risks to public safety and highlights the effectiveness of coordinated efforts among various RCMP units.

Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activities to local authorities to assist in maintaining the safety and well-being of the community.
