Sherwood Park Recycling Plant Fire Extinguished After Two-Day Battle

Firefighters Contain Massive Blaze at GenAlta Recycling Facility

A significant fire erupted at the GenAlta Recycling facility in Sherwood Park on Saturday morning, sending thick black smoke billowing across the Edmonton area.

The blaze began around 8:30 a.m. in the industrial zone on the west end of Sherwood Park. Fire crews from Strathcona County and Edmonton Fire Rescue Services responded promptly to the scene. By Monday morning, the fire was officially declared extinguished, though crews remained on-site for fire suppression efforts over the following days. Mayor Rod Frank assured residents that there was no risk to the public, emphasizing that the fire had been contained. However, due to the toxic nature of the smoke, residents were advised to stay away from the area. Alberta Environment officials were called in to monitor air quality and assess any potential environmental impact. The GenAlta Recycling plant is known for processing scrap metal, including whole automobiles, farm machinery, and various appliances. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

This incident underscores the importance of safety protocols in industrial areas and the swift response of emergency services in mitigating potential hazards to the community.
