Blaze at GenAlta Recycling Facility Contained After Hours of Firefighting Efforts |
A significant fire erupted at the GenAlta Recycling facility in Sherwood Park on Saturday morning, sending thick black smoke billowing across Strathcona County and into Edmonton. The blaze began around 8:30 a.m. in the industrial area on the west end of Sherwood Park.
Firefighters from both Strathcona County and Edmonton Fire Rescue Services responded promptly, working diligently to control the flames. Mayor Rod Frank assured the public that there was no immediate risk, but residents were advised to avoid the area due to the toxic nature of the smoke.
The GenAlta plant is known for processing scrap metal, including automobiles and appliances. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
By late afternoon, the fire was contained, and air quality monitoring indicated no significant health risks to the surrounding communities. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
