Edmonton-Strathcona County Footbridge Opens, Connecting Communities

New pedestrian bridge enhances regional trail network and fosters community ties

The much-anticipated Edmonton-Strathcona County Footbridge has officially opened, providing a vital link between Edmonton and Sherwood Park.

This new pedestrian bridge spans the North Saskatchewan River, connecting 167 Avenue in northeast Edmonton to Township Road 540 in Strathcona County.

The bridge is a significant addition to the region's extensive trail system, offering residents and visitors enhanced access to the North Saskatchewan River Valley.

Construction began in June 2023, and the bridge was opened to the public in August 2025.

An official grand opening and naming ceremony are scheduled for September 2025.

The design features gathering areas at each end, shared-use pathways connecting to existing trails, and two scenic lookout points.

These elements aim to encourage outdoor activities and strengthen community connections.

The project, with a total cost of $41.4 million, was funded through a partnership between the River Valley Alliance, the City of Edmonton, and Strathcona County.

Each entity contributed equally to bring this vision to life.

In addition to the bridge, Strathcona County is developing supportive amenities along Township Road 540.

These include a parking lot, multi-use trail connections, and public washroom facilities, enhancing the overall experience for trail users.

These amenities are expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

The opening of the Edmonton-Strathcona County Footbridge marks a significant milestone in regional connectivity.

It not only provides a safe and convenient pathway for pedestrians and cyclists but also promotes a healthier, more sustainable future for the communities it serves.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to explore this new addition to the region's infrastructure and enjoy the natural beauty it showcases.
