Who invented the rubber eraser? Edward Nairne is a key name in its early commercial history: the London scientific-instrument maker sold small natural-rubber cubes for erasing pencil marks in 1770.

Before rubber became a stationery staple, people used bread to remove pencil marks. The Institute of Making traces the early eraser to natural rubber, also called caoutchouc or gum elastic.

Joseph Priestley documented the material’s usefulness in his 1770 book on perspective, directing readers to Nairne’s shop opposite the Royal Exchange. His note described a half-inch cube priced at three shillings.

As historical research explains, that record establishes its sale and use rather than proving a single moment of invention. The familiar accidental-discovery story should be treated cautiously.

Early natural rubber was sensitive to temperature and deteriorated with age. Later improvements, including vulcanization, helped make it more durable. In 1858, Hymen L. Lipman patented a combined pencil and eraser; his original patent placed rubber within the wooden holder rather than using today’s familiar metal-banded cap.

The humble eraser is therefore the result of several developments, not just one discovery. Next time you correct a pencil mistake, spare a thought for the people who once reached for bread.

The Power of Connection looks at the small social moments that can help women feel supported and less alone: a regular phone call, a shared walk or an unhurried conversation over tea.

The World Health Organization identifies social connection as an important part of health. Loneliness and isolation are linked with poorer mental and physical well-being, but feeling lonely is not a personal failure, and social plans are not a substitute for medical care.

Being alone and feeling lonely are different. What matters is whether your relationships offer the comfort, understanding and support you need. A small circle of trusted people may suit you better than a busy social calendar.

Begin with a specific invitation: a short call, a walk or another activity you both enjoy. If distance or mobility makes meeting difficult, a telephone conversation, video call or handwritten note can help you stay in touch.

Shared interests can make starting easier. Explore library book-club resources or the County’s seniors’ activity listings, checking current arrangements before attending.

If loneliness persists or affects daily life, speak with a health-care professional. This week’s practical step is simple: choose one person, make one small plan and put it in your calendar.

Sherwood Park’s Falling into Colour art show and sale runs October 16–18 at the A.J. Ottewell Community Centre, the Red Barn at 590 Broadmoor Boulevard. It offers a nearby opportunity to browse original artwork and get to know a longstanding community arts organization.

The Friday reception, show and sale takes place October 16 from 7–9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday sessions run 10 a.m.–4 p.m. each day. Check the official event schedule before heading out.

Admission is free to the public. The society’s fall-show information describes paintings, photography, digital art, mixed media and other artwork, with pieces available to purchase. Buying is optional; visitors can simply enjoy the exhibition.

The Red Barn is the society’s home and a volunteer-operated arts venue. The group was incorporated in 1985 and moved into the centre in 2002, giving the show a connection to decades of local creative activity.

If you are considering a purchase, bring your room measurements and ask about a work’s dimensions, medium and care needs. Individual artwork prices and the participating-artist roster are not provided in the event listing.

Use the show’s hours rather than regular gallery hours. For accessibility questions or purchase arrangements, contact the society at 780-449-4443 before visiting.

Families can explore the creative side of technology at Family Tech Time: Photography and Movies on Monday, October 19, 2026. The session runs 6–7:30 p.m. in Readmore Hall at Strathcona County Library, 401 Festival Lane in Sherwood Park.

The official event listing invites children of all ages to attend with their adults and try green screen, stop motion and more. This local evening outing is an opportunity to experiment with making images and stories together.

No advance registration is required, and families may drop in during the program. Arriving earlier leaves more time to explore before the 7:30 p.m. finish.

Stop motion uses a sequence of photographs to make objects appear to move, while green-screen techniques replace a background digitally. A simple character or short scene can be a starting point; the library has not published a detailed project list or promised a finished movie.

The listing does not specify whether personal devices are needed or how equipment is shared. For those questions or accessibility arrangements, contact the library at 780-410-8600 before attending.

Check the central library’s location information and event listing before heading out. Families can also browse the technology-help resources for ways to continue learning after their visit.

Sherwood Park Probus Club

The Sherwood Park Probus Club was established in July 2025 and currently has a membership of 60 members.  Monthly meetings are held at the Strathcona Community Centre, every third Thursday at 0945.  There are guest speakers at each meeting, followed by a social time and a brief business meeting.  Following the meetings an optional lunch is arranged at a local restaurant, at your own cost. Each month there is a tour of a local business, or industry of interest.  An example of some of the tours have been to Arctic Chiller, NAIT Culinary Department, ACQBuilt to name a few.

Probus is a social club, not a service club. It is volunteer-based, low-cost, inclusive, non-profit, non-political, and non-sectarian organization focused on promoting fellowship, friendship, fun and learning. It is about making and embracing social connections, making new friends at a time of life when it is tempting to be passive and just be an observer. Clubs are all about socializing with other retirees in the community and encouraging healthy minds and bodies. Members’ ages typically range from late-50s to mid 90s.  Currently new membership is $75.00 for the first year and $65.00 for returning members.

Next Meeting October 15.
