New provincewide number aims to streamline reporting and reduce unnecessary 911 calls.
The Alberta RCMP has launched a new provincewide non-emergency line, 310-RCMP, in an effort to cut down on unnecessary 911 calls and streamline the reporting process.
Why the New Number?
The launch is designed to help in the early parts of investigations and ultimately reduce the number of calls to 911 that aren't true emergencies. By providing a dedicated non-emergency line, the RCMP can better allocate resources to high-priority calls.
What to Call For
"310-RCMP was created to help eliminate confusion about which detachment someone should call if they experience a non-emergency that doesn't require police attendance," said Chris Spence, director of the operational communications centre in Alberta.
Benefits
• Faster response to true emergencies by reducing 911 call volume • Better resource deployment to areas that need it most • Clearer reporting process for non-urgent incidents • 24/7 availability through the Operational Communications Centre in Edmonton
When to Use 310-RCMP vs. 911
Call 911 for:
• Crimes in progress • Medical emergencies • Fires • Immediate threats to safety
Call 310-RCMP for:
• Non-urgent police reports • Follow-up on previous reports • General inquiries • Incidents not requiring immediate police attendance
"We encourage people to report non-emergencies as this helps us focus frontline efforts on high-priority calls and deploy resources in areas that need it most," Spence added.
The 310-RCMP line is now active provincewide and staffed by operators at the RCMP's Operational Communications Centre in Edmonton, which provides 24/7 emergency and non-emergency call answering and dispatching services to 114 RCMP detachments throughout Alberta. |
