Coffee & Learn: Spot & Stop the Scam

Empowering Seniors in Sherwood Park to Combat Fraud

WESeniors Strathcona is hosting an essential seminar titled "Senior’s Fraud – How to Spot & Stop the Scam" on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM.

Lorena Smalley, the manager of WESeniors Strathcona, will lead the presentation, offering valuable insights into recognizing and preventing scams targeting older adults.

Alarmingly, it's estimated that only 10% of scams are reported to the police.

Many believe they are immune to such schemes, yet statistics reveal a different story.

According to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, as of September 30, 2025:

Reports of fraud received: 33,854

Victims of fraud: 23,113

Losses due to fraud: $544 million

During the session, attendees will be introduced to a dedicated website designed to educate older adults about current scams.

Participants will learn how to stay updated on the latest fraudulent activities and receive practical tips to stay ahead of scammers.

The event will be held at WESeniors Strathcona, located at #140, 501 Festival Way, Sherwood Park.

A nominal drop-in fee of $2.00 includes coffee and a muffin.

To assist with planning, pre-registration is encouraged.

For more information or to register, email questions@weseniors.ca or call 780-400-2111.

In addition to this seminar, WESeniors Strathcona has been actively involved in promoting senior safety.

Notably, on November 3, 2025, they hosted the "Are You Prepared?" event during National Seniors Safety Week.

This event covered topics such as recognizing and avoiding investment scams, general fraud awareness, and essential emergency preparedness tips.

These initiatives underscore the organization's commitment to empowering seniors in Sherwood Park to protect themselves against fraud and stay informed about safety measures.

Don't miss this opportunity to enhance your knowledge and safeguard yourself against scams.

Join us for an informative session that promises to be both enlightening and engaging.
