Historic Mercedes W196 R Streamliner Sells for Record $53 Million at Stuttgart Auction

Legendary 1955 Grand Prix Car Driven by Fangio and Moss Achieves Unprecedented Sale Price

The automotive world witnessed a historic moment as a 1955 Mercedes W196 R Streamliner, once piloted by racing legends Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss, fetched an astonishing €51.155 million ($53.01 million) at an auction in Stuttgart.

This sale sets a new benchmark, making it the most expensive Grand Prix car ever sold.

The auction, orchestrated by RM Sotheby's at the Mercedes-Benz Museum, was conducted on behalf of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS).

The W196 R Streamliner, renowned for its sleek design and formidable performance, is one of only four complete examples in existence.

Its storied past includes a victory at the 1955 Buenos Aires Grand Prix under Fangio's command and a record-setting fastest lap at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza with Moss at the helm.

The car's streamlined bodywork, designed for high-speed circuits, exemplifies the engineering prowess of the era.

Initially donated to the IMS Museum by Mercedes in 1965, the vehicle was auctioned to fund the museum's restoration projects and to enhance its focus on American motorsport history.

Curator Jason Vansickle remarked, "It's a beautiful car, it's a very historic car, it's just a little bit outside our scope window."

He emphasized that the proceeds would enable the museum to better serve its mission in the future.

This sale not only underscores the enduring allure of classic racing machines but also highlights the significant value placed on automotive heritage.

The identity of the buyer remains undisclosed, adding an element of intrigue to this record-breaking transaction.

As the automotive community reflects on this landmark event, the Mercedes W196 R Streamliner stands as a testament to a golden era of racing, its legacy now preserved by a new custodian.
