Strathcona County is gearing up to host the 2026 Alberta Summer Games, and organizers are calling on community members to lend a hand.

The Event

Between July 16 and 19, 2026, Strathcona County will welcome over 1,800 athletes ages 11 to 16 from across Alberta. Competitions will include baseball, basketball, lacrosse, swimming, mountain biking, and more.

Volunteer Opportunities

Nearly 1,500 volunteers are needed to support athletes, coaches, and families throughout the Games. Roles include:

• Opening ceremonies support

• Access and admission at venues

• Score keeping

• Medical and transit team assistance

• General event guidance

Most shifts run two to four hours, with a one-hour training session (online or in-person) to prepare volunteers. Snacks, beverages, and free spectator access to sporting events are included.

Who Can Volunteer?

• Adults of all ages

• Youth 16+ can volunteer independently

• Youth 13-15 can volunteer with an accompanying adult

Why Volunteer?

"For young people, this is more than a short shift," says Ward 8 Coun. Katie Berghofer. "It is hands-on experience that builds confidence and introduces them to event planning, teamwork, and responsibility."

Hosting the Games is expected to boost local tourism and business activity, while showcasing Strathcona County's welcoming spirit to visitors from across the province.
