Residents who use local fitness facilities are being urged to take extra precautions after police reported a series of gym locker thefts involving a man and woman operating in several Alberta communities, including Sherwood Park.

The Edmonton Police Service says it has investigated at least six reports of locker break-ins at fitness facilities in south Edmonton in recent weeks.

Police allege the two suspects have been picking locks on gym lockers and stealing debit and credit cards, which are then used to make purchases. Victims have reportedly suffered thousands of dollars in losses.

The investigation has expanded beyond Edmonton. Police say the same two suspects have also targeted fitness facilities in Sherwood Park, St. Albert and Calgary within the past two weeks and appear to be working together.

A Reminder for Local Gym Users

The incidents are a good reminder that even a locked gym locker may not be completely secure.

Consider carrying only the essentials when heading to the gym and, when possible, avoid leaving wallets, debit cards and credit cards unattended in a locker. Enabling instant transaction notifications through your bank can also provide an early warning if a card is used without your permission.

Anyone who discovers that a bank or credit card is missing should contact their financial institution immediately and report the incident to police.

Edmonton Police have released images of the two suspects captured by gym registration cameras and are asking anyone who recognizes them or has information that could help identify them to come forward.
