Old Military Ordnance Prompts Precautionary Lockdown in Strathcona County |
On the evening of October 27, 2025, the Strathcona County RCMP detachment in Sherwood Park was temporarily closed after a resident brought in a suspected explosive device for disposal.
The item, identified as an old military ordnance, was left in the resident's vehicle upon arrival at the detachment. Recognizing the potential danger, authorities promptly initiated a lockdown of the area to ensure public safety.
Specialized personnel from the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) were called in to handle the situation. They successfully removed the device, allowing the detachment to resume normal operations by 9:30 a.m. the following day.
In light of this incident, the Alberta RCMP issued a reminder to the public: if you encounter explosives or detonators, do not touch them. Instead, contact your local police immediately. Officers will respond to the location to manage the disposal safely and at no cost to the public.
Citizens are advised against moving or handling such items. Providing a photograph and an estimated age of the object can assist authorities in its safe disposal.
This event underscores the importance of community awareness and adherence to safety protocols when dealing with potentially hazardous materials.
