Authorities Urge Caution Amid Surge in Online Transaction Robberies |
Alberta RCMP are raising alarms over a significant increase in phone thefts occurring during online marketplace meetups.
Recent incidents have left both buyers and sellers vulnerable to criminal activities.
In Sherwood Park, two separate robberies unfolded in December, 2025.
In the first case, a suspect met a seller at a local business, seized the iPhone, and fled to a waiting vehicle.
Shortly after, the same individual targeted another seller at their residence, deploying a bear spray-like substance before stealing the phone.
These brazen acts highlight the escalating risks associated with online transactions.
To combat this trend, law enforcement agencies are emphasizing the importance of utilizing designated Safe Exchange Zones.
Police are urging residents to use the RCMP’s Safe Exchange Zone at the detachment for online transactions.
The RCMP Safe Exchange Zone is a well-lit, monitored area designed to make online buy/sell meet-ups and custody exchanges safer for residents.
Additional safety recommendations include meeting in well-lit, public spaces, bringing a friend or family member along, and avoiding secluded areas.
It's also advisable to verify the legitimacy of the item and the seller before finalizing any deal.
By adopting these precautions, individuals can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to theft during online marketplace meetups.
Authorities continue to investigate these incidents and urge the public to report any suspicious activities related to online transactions. |
