The former Safeway Wye Road store closed its doors in March 2025 after serving the community for many years. The closure left a large vacant anchor space in the Village Market shopping centre along Wye Road.

Now, the building appears to be preparing for redevelopment.

Renovations Underway

Recent activity at the site has sparked interest from residents, as construction crews have begun work on the former grocery store. The building is expected to be renovated and potentially divided to accommodate new tenants.

Large retail spaces that once housed grocery stores are often redeveloped into multiple units to attract different types of businesses.

Possible New Tenants

While an official announcement has not yet been made by the property owner, discussions among local residents and businesses suggest the renovated space could be split into two separate occupants.

Speculation has included uses such as:

  • A fitness or gym facility

  • A daycare or childcare centre

  •

At this time, no tenants have been formally confirmed.

A Busy Commercial Hub

The property sits in the Village Market retail centre, a busy commercial area that includes financial services, restaurants, and retail businesses and sees significant daily traffic along Wye Road and Sherwood Drive.

With Sherwood Park continuing to grow, redeveloping the former grocery location could bring new services and businesses to the area.

Residents are expected to learn more once renovation permits and tenant announcements are finalized.
