Strathcona County Mourns the Loss of Former Mayor Vern Hartwell

Strathcona County is deeply saddened by the passing of Vern Hartwell, a visionary leader and former Mayor whose legacy continues to shape the community he served with dedication and heart.

 

Mr. Hartwell held the office of Mayor from 1995 to 2004, becoming the first elected Mayor of Strathcona County following its transition to a specialized municipality in 1996. His leadership marked a transformative era for the County, characterized by bold initiatives, collaborative regional development, and a commitment to community-building.

 

Among his most enduring contributions was his instrumental role in the creation of Millennium Place, a multi-purpose recreation facility that has become a cornerstone of community life in Sherwood Park. At the time of its conception, the project faced significant debate, but Mr. Hartwell’s steadfast vision helped bring it to life. Today, Millennium Place stands as a testament to his belief in investing in public spaces that foster wellness, connection, and pride.

 

Mr. Hartwell also played a pivotal role in the formation of Alberta’s Industrial Heartland, a collaborative regional initiative that has become an economic engine for the Edmonton Metro Region. His efforts helped streamline industrial development processes and fostered partnerships that continue to benefit local businesses and residents.

 

During his time as Mayor, Mr. Hartwell also served as Chairman of the Alberta Capital Region Alliance, Chairman of Alberta’s Industrial Heartland, and Co-Chair of the Capital Region Competitiveness Strategy. He represented Strathcona County on the Edmonton Airports Authority Board of Directors, the Capital Health Authority Board, and served two terms on the STARS Board of Directors.

 

Prior to his tenure as Mayor, Vern Hartwell served one term as Councillor for Sherwood Park’s Division 8.

 

A passionate advocate for the business community and local business owner, Mr. Hartwell served for many years with the Sherwood Park & District Chamber of Commerce, where he championed local enterprise and economic growth. His leadership was also critical in the successful campaign to preserve the Edmonton International Airport, rallying regional Chambers of Commerce to form what would become the Edmonton Regional Airports Authority.

 

Beyond his political and economic achievements, Mr. Hartwell supported community beautification and volunteerism, notably backing the launch of Strathcona in Bloom, a program that continues to thrive thanks to the strong foundation laid during his tenure.

 

In recognition of his lasting impact, Council recently approved the ceremonial naming of “Vern Hartwell Way” along Premier Way, a route that connects many local businesses and leads to Millennium Place. This tribute reflects Mr. Hartwell’s dual legacy in civic leadership and economic development.

 

“Vern Hartwell was more than a Mayor—he was a builder of community, a champion of progress, a neighborhood friend to me and a friend to many,” said Mayor Rod Frank. “His contributions will continue to benefit Strathcona County for generations.”

 

Vern Hartwell’s legacy lives on not only in the institutions he helped build but in the spirit of community he inspired.
