Strathcona County Water Station Closure Sparks Concerns Over Rising Costs

Local Greenhouse Warns of Potential Price Increases Amid Water Supply Changes

Strathcona County residents are facing potential increases in water costs following the recent closure of a key water station.

Local businesses, particularly those reliant on substantial water usage, are expressing concern over the financial implications.

Greenhouse operators in the area have highlighted the challenges posed by the station's shutdown.

One owner noted, "With the closure, we're anticipating higher operational expenses, which may inevitably lead to increased prices for our customers."

The county has experienced water restrictions in the past due to infrastructure issues.

In July 2025, a water restriction was implemented to facilitate emergency repairs on the main supply line from EPCOR to Strathcona County.

Residents were urged to reduce consumption and limit outdoor water use during this period.

Although the restriction was lifted after repairs were completed, the recent station closure has reignited concerns about water availability and cost.

The county's Utilities Director emphasized the importance of water conservation, stating, "All water conservation measures will help decrease the demand on the water system, keeping more water in our reservoirs for essential use."

Residents are encouraged to adopt water-saving practices, such as taking shorter showers, postponing non-essential water use, and turning off taps while brushing teeth.

As the community navigates these changes, ongoing communication between the county and its residents will be crucial to address concerns and implement effective solutions.
